I'm watching it right now! It is astonishing! I can't believe this was made in the 30's! Does anyone know if this was one of Madam Mao's productions? Or did she come along much later? Sorry, I'm not good on dates...

Seen it just now. Great movie, silent films at their finest.

She is fine, too.

Madame Mao didn't come into the movie scene until several years later. She was a minor actress in "talkies", never acted in silent films.
She also didn't produce anything until 1960s and 1970s, when she came to power.

Help! Spoiler needed!
I started watching this at midnight and didn't realize how enthralling it would be, yet managed to fall asleep around one, right around the time that the headmaster of the boy's school was informing his faculty that he had decided against expelling the boy because of his mother's profession. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT??!!!

One spoiler, the student is expelled anyway. The principal is overruled, and resigns in protest. The pimp finds "The Goddess'" money hidden in the wall, and steals it. While describing the movie, it sounds like a Soap Opera.
Let me know if you want further information.

reply

I do want more information...don't know when I'll get the opportunity to see the movie again, and it's driving me nuts not knowing how it ended. Go ahead and spill all!

Upon learning that her son was expelled from the school because of her profession.
She then decides that she needs to leave the region to start anew. She goes into the wall to get her money. Which was already stolen. She confronts the thief at the local gambling hall. He laughs at her and says that he already lost all the money. She loses her temper, and kills him by breaking a bottle over his head.
She is than arrested for murder, and given a sentence of more than 10 years. The principal meets with her, while she is in jail. And he offers to adopt, and educate the son. She tells him not to let the son know what happened.
The way it ends up, is that she is in jail at the end. Having given up her son to the ex-principal. In her mind, she hopes that the son will forget all about her. An example of self-sacrifice.

Thank you...now I must mull it over.
