I don't think they ever actually say, though I got the impression when talking to the school admissions official that that whole "His father is dead" was a lie to cover up the boy's lack of father (and thereby having to admit she was a single mother because of her job). So for that reason I assume it was a result of her prostitution, though I suppose it could go either way.
