Ave Maria Scene
I only watched part of the film, so was there any explanation why Father Bowden had a near-breakdown when the possessed boy started to sing "Ave Maria?"

I just watched this movie and there was indeed NO explanation of what happened during the war. I hate when that happens! When a movie is over and there's some big piece of the back story that is not adequately explained.
We never do find out exactly what happened to Father Bowdern during the war. POSSIBLY the young soldier was wounded and the priest killed him with his bayonet? There are some flashback scenes where someone is lunging at someone with a bayonet... I dunno. There was a brief flashback scene of some dogs with some bones... did that have anything to do with anything? Whatever happened, the priest got a Purple Heart for it.
I hope someone has a better idea of what was in his past and will post it here.
No idea. He was obviously wounded by the german soldier but not killed. Maybe he realized he was a priest and *maybe* the soldier sang the Ave Maria??
