You really think that disrespecting books merits the death penalty? What set him chopping off heads was that the peasants forgot what he considered "their place", and made "his" society their own and wouldn't give him unconditional obedience anymore. What upset him so much was that his aristocratic system was dead and the French people were making their own society in which he couldn't rule and essentially own the peasants because of his bloodline and aristocratic title anymore. What outraged him was that he couldn't treat the peasants like animals with impunity anymore, because the people had risen up and wouldn't take his oppression anymore.
The moment at the end where that bloody aristocrat got dragged to the guillotine by the peasants was probably my favorite scene in this whole series.
