The was RIDICULOUSLY good. I mean anyone who likes stuff like Death Note and Oldboy should see this one next! I cant believe such a film was ever made... and to think that few even know about it... haha.

Definitely in the same style and theme as Death Note.

Yeah it´s a truly original and inspired piece of film we got here - and since it´s also great fun in addition to the relevance of its themes, it´s kind of curious it´s so little known (I happened to be the 231. IMDb user to rate it which pretty much tells the whole story). Allegedly it´s something of a cult favorite in Japan though... which in turn renders the question of why did it prove to be director Hasegawa´s last cinematic effort, very puzzling. Obviously, a very large part of the film´s success derives from the off-the-wall screenplay, but there really isn´t anything wrong with it otherwise either - Hasegawa juggles the serious and the comedic with considerable skill and gives the film a very appealing general atmosphere with lots of strangely fitting 70´s easy listening soundtrack sort of underscoring the urban alienation & indifference the protagonist seems to be suffering from. It´s pretty inventive in its visual style as well, using slow motion and freeze frames to great effect, without turning it into stylistic overkill (the ridiculous power plant burglary scene makes particularly impressive use of the latter techique, at one point presenting the raid in a La Jetee-like sequence of still photography). This stuff most certainly deserves to be seen by a lot more people. 9/10.
