Questions about plot if you've seen it.

Just watched it and it's got me thinking, they probably cut scenes out that explained it more. Okay so gill planned this all from the beginning, right? So I'm thinking the cocaine plant at the beginning was fake, just to get the cops attention, so that he could try to shoot him at the fireworks show (which failed).... but what's up with the car chase after that... ben (cop) starts chasing gill who after he picks up the bag from the trash in a mitsubishi, then the cops on the radio say to not spook him or whatever, then it shows the cop and and a lotus doing some crazy canyon driving... what's the deal with that lotus anyway? they show it a lot, is it just cuz it's cool, or was that maybe one of the gill's brothers? then fortunately gill went the same way cuz another cop finds him and then later ben finds him for a bit.

Just don't understand that part... I know it's just leadup to the rest of the movie, but I don't get it, who's supposed to be in that lotus, or was it there just to look cool?
