whats so scary about this game?

honestly, why is this game so scary? The second game is a lot scarier, but personally the scariest game i've ever played is Haunting Ground

reply

It's scary IMO because it's so unnerving. Couple that with many WTF moments along with an eerie atmosphere that is second to none. Guiding Harry down that alley at the start of the game really gives you an idea of things to come and it's a telling microcosm of the game.

I don't know if i'd say that SH2 is scarier than SH1. They're both disturbing in their own way (personally i prefer SH2).

The reasons I found this game to be so frightening are many. First of all, this was the only survival horror game I'd ever played that didn't actually want you to gun down every monster you saw. You are encouraged through lack of decent weaponry and extremely limited ammo and health to avoid confrontations. When you can't fight, you flee, and that is a very basic reasoning mechanism for any creature. It was the only game I'd ever played with a story that started out halfway normal and twisted itself into an entirely unexpected tale of cruelty and drama. Any story is more frightening if there's even a small chance it could happen to you. If you've ever been knocked out before, you'll know it's pretty scary...what if when you woke up everything *looked* normal, but you were actually in Hell? And it drew small tidbits and ideas from nearly every horror story and movie in modern entertainment and meshed it into what I feel is a universally frightening realm. Everyone is scared by something, be it limited physical control or ability, loud unexpected noises, blood and gore, creatures and monsters with radical and terrifying movements, or the very real possibility of losing a family member..Silent Hill has all this.

Personally, I like the second game the most, but don't think it's even close to as frightening as the original.

reply

I thought silent hill 2 is scarier. Silent hill one didn't scare me, it just pissed me off a lot of the time time cuz of the amount of monsters.

And I thought there was enough ammo to kill most of the monsters I saw. In Resident Evil or Dino Crisis, you have even less ammo...

reply

I sometimes got a little ticked off at the flying monsters aswell, they were hard to dodge and cost quite some health at times. But I love the game regardless, whats a game without a little difficulty lol.

You were swimming in ammo because you were playing in Easy (you wuss)!
Play it in normal and you'll have a little more than what you need. Play in Hard mode and then you'll know what we are talking about.
What made this game very scary for me is that I set up the mood. Back in the day, a friend of mine told me to play it, so I started in the day time. I found it cool, but I didn't get far. Then I played it a 2am with all the light off and headphones. Oh man! Those graphics are kind of bad, but I think that makes your brain make up for it because the corps, the metal floor and those bloody walls looked pretty spooky to me. Not to mention the scary jumps. Both movies have good stories. SH2 didn't scare as much as the first one, but that was a badass twist it had at the end. And fighting Pyramid head for the very first time was one of the mose unpleasant moments I have ever had xD! But I think SH1 did a better job of putting you in his shoes. Imagine losing your only doughter?

Couldn't agree with you more here. Of course, there were several members of Team Silent that worked on the game, so it's not really that much of a surprise. I think with a few changes, Siren could have been a truly great game.

Sadly the changes in the sequel totally ruined the scare factor. When you get 30+ bullets for a automatic rifle, a backup pistol and 5 checkpoints in hard mode and the game telling you what has to be done after every trivial sub goal, then something has gone seriously wrong in the design of a horror game.

I admit that the Siren formula needed changes but in the second game it was way too overkill.

reply

Yeah i hear ya. From what I've seen of the game, it does look like they've made it a whole lot easier/less scary. I wonder if that's due to all the negatives associated with it's predecessor.

Ugh. I wish they would just release the damn game in the US already.

Try playing silent hill in a pitch dark room during a thunder storm with lighting flashing

i've never played the new siren, cos the original was too fxxking great! there are 6 or 7 characters you can take control of, if i remember correctly. the teacher was my favorite one, i almost cried it out when she came down the end of the road ...

back to the day i played SH, i needed to tune up the gamma with my crappy tv. didn't want to admit that i was scared, but the screen appeared to be pretty dark...

You better buy it if you're determined to beat the most scary game on earth. This game is very hard to begin with. But once you figure out several tricks you'll get your money worth.

Absolutely. Siren is really tough in places. If feasible, I would also recommend that you buy it unless you can devote a good amount of time to playing the game before returning it. Siren requires much patience and a lot of trial and error approach. I don't know anyone who didn't use an FAQ or guide at least once during gameplay. That being said it's a great rewarding game and worth a look.

Well said a guide would be a good idea to start with, to grab some basic tatics. The game is so different from the conventional RE type games, which basically 2 dimentional. In Siren you need to learn how to watch your back! And those snipers... such a pain in the a$$. The game is totally wicked, me and my friend we would mock those shibito grrr sound if we had chance, just for fun.

For a starter you can't kill Shibitos. You will get some weaponery but they are only able to knock out those things for a while before they rise up again. Then it comes the sniper Shibitos, they really hate to miss what they aim at. The atmosphere is very intense, it's like you're holding breathe for every step you take. It was the only game that scared me so much that I've had to drop the game for a while before I picked up again later.

I can't take anyone seriously who believes Haunting Ground is a lot scarier than Silent Hill 1 or 2, I could understand there might be some flaws with that game due to mediocre voice acting however Silent Hill 4 was just downright disturbing. Just playing this game could make your mind become vulnerable to schizophrenia. I mean look at this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIZlIQKquNk

lol siren had me laughing until i thought it was so lame that i quit playing it. hahaha, im laughing thinking about it. lol

I never got that far playing Haunting Ground (it was kinda boring to me) and took it promptly back to the video store. I have heard good things about it, but i'm willing to stick my neck out and say it can't hold a candle next to Silent Hill in regards to scare factor.

Silent Hill 1 is by far the scariest game I have ever played. Silent Hills 2 and 3 kind of tie it for me. Silent Hill 2 might have actually had more thrills, but when they tied in Silent Hill 3 with Silent Hill 1, that was a twist that I wasnt expecting. The worst in the series I thought was The Room. Of course, being a game that had the title "Silent Hill" threw on it at the last minute, I wouldnt have expected it to live up to Silent Hill standards. It was good, but rather than going in and out of Alternate Silent Hill at random, kinda ruined it for me. Thats one thing I dont like about Origins. You pick when you go in and out, but only because its necessary to get from one place to another. So, I guess it kind of works out in the puzzle aspect.

I strangled the life out of her. It was the greatest thrill of my life...

I dunno, the idea of being practically alone in a castle and having to run and hide from a psychopathic monster while not being able to actually fight it off is a lot scarier than walking through a dark school that has good atmosphere but hardly any real scares to back it up. I can't quite pinpoint what it was about silent hill that made it so it wasn't scary (it was more just a depressing atmosphere than anything) but I think it had a lot to do with the fact that while I was playing it, unless I killed just about every enemy I encountered, I died. That got old really fast for me..

reply

Congratulations. You can now enyoy killing yourself, faye24.

reply

Try playing alone, in a pitch black setting, past midnight, with headphones, deafening sound and don't leave/take breaks for a couple of hours..
and be on hard mode.

I think the Silent Hill series is most scary when you have the least experience.
My first play through of Silent Hill 2 took me about 6 weeks.. I could never continue without freaking out with all the noises and feeling Pyramid Head would run behind me and stab me..

after that I haven't ever been as scared with any of the games (SH3 was not as subtle, so you get used to running everywhere anyways)

i never get freaked out in silent hill 2.
i dont know why people says sh2 is the scariest of the installment.
i just love the storyline and soundtrack in sh2.
The monster in sh2 just so *beep* easy to me,there is no high speed monster or flying monster.Dont forget the main character "james" has a godkick, you can shoot nurse in two bullets of handgun instead the nurse falling apart and james ends the show with godkick.
whats so scary with pyramid head?
And i found pyramid head is just too funny for me,he's always toying with james
i know the monster is the manisfestation of james heart, well its cool i thought.
if you had a pyramid sword you can finish the boss with 3 slash.
Oh man so fu**ing easy!

i found sh 1 is more appealing to me.
The mix of all the element in perfect circumstance.
atmosphere, storyline, character development, the difficult of the game, the mosnter variation, and so on.
Sh2 only wins in soundtrack and the grafic.
And SH1 is the second game makes freaked me out after clock tower.

Haunting Ground?
oh thats a lame horror game for me.
Deadspace,Clocktower,SH1 and fatal frame are the survival horror game that gets me.

reply

They all freaked me out in one form or another. But honestly, I think Silent Hill 3 is the scariest. It's still the only game I've ever shut off solely because I was too scared to keep going.

reply

Yes I completely agree with you, this first game had the best atmosphere, storyline, character development, the difficult of the game, the mosnter variation, and so on. But also I would say that the music in this game is alot scarier than the other games. I was very disappointed when I started on the second, there were so many places you walked around with no music at all.
They continued with this in the third, origins, homecoming and the rest.
While in this game, it's almost everywhere the creepy music :S

reply

I suggest you play it with good headphones, play it in the darkroom when the midnight, and dont forget choose the hard mode. You'll know the different.
