I think he was one of the riddling wall monsters.
"I AM IGNEOUS OF LEGEND! THREE QUESTIONS I HAVE FOR YOU AND HERE IS MY FIRST" and so on.

I was glad when they got rid of the wall monsters in later seasons. They dragged the pace of each quest to a halt. Having clues on scrolls and the spyglasses was a better idea.
