the ending? (spoiler)

in the end who shot the girl was it Fuse or the sniper?

reply

The sniper. Fuse couldn’t bring himself doing something like that. He was emotionally devastated (remember the shocking look he had on his face when the girl got shot?)

I cried The first time I saw that scene.

reply

Definitely Fuse. Shortly after she's shot you catch a glimpse of Fuse's gun. The barrel is smoking, while the sniper's isn't.

Are you a *beep* idiot??? It shows the sniper close up..and his barrel is smoking....period

reply

OK, I just re-watched the scene because of this thread.

Fuse´s barrel blows the smoke which quickly dissolves. Close up to the "sniper" shows him uncocking his mauser -- thus he didn´t take the shot. Furthermore -- Mauser C-96 is a pistol, thus it would be quite impossible to shoot so accurately at such a long range anyway.

reply

yep, you're right. I watched that scene 10 times, and I always thought it was the sniper. The tenth time I was shocked when I noticed it was Fuse who really shot the girl. The smoke on the gun clearly gives the hint. A masterpiece!!!

reply

Fuse shot her...period

reply

The only idiot here is you, get your eyes checked.

Come at the king, you best not miss.

reply

Yes it was Fuse. This (amongst many other elements) is what makes this climax so emotional and provocative.

reply

yep it was Fuse.

no doubt about it.

reply

It really was Fuse, although when watching it for the first time I didn't get it either...

I wonder anyway: Why did she have to die in the end? What was the reason? I didn't get the point of that officers explanation.

Can anybody help?

reply

lol "insert foot in mouth" moment

heLLLloo, mcfly!! hes a wolf!! MUST-FOLLOW-LEADER

The following sentence is true. The preceding sentence is false.

reply

Not exactly sure why she had to die as it was relevant to the plot, but symbolically it was because Fuse was a "wolf" and incapable of relating to, or being able to share emotions with normal people.

reply

She had to die because they couldn't let her fall back into the "enemy's" hands, and the best way to do that is to kill her; as far as the enemy knows, she's still alive, where the "Wolf Brigade" can use her as a weapon against the conspiritors.

Furthermore, her killing destroys Fuse's humanity, and solidifies his place as a wolf, seperated from humans.

reply

I always figured it was fuse who shot the girl and the sniper was there that if they decided to run, to take them both out.

reply

It was Fuse plain and simple. It fit the narrative construct of the story. He played the wolf. She played little Red Riding Hood. The sniper was there in case fuse decided to run off with her. In that emotional scene (watch the japanese version) he yelps. The "camera" pans out. She falls down. Fuse is in shock. The smoke exits the barrel. The sniper unclips the barrel. He didn't have to shoot. Then you go to his boss who throws out his ciggerete and says, "And so the wolf... ate up little red riding hood."
Fuse did what he couldn't do in the beggining of the film. He shot the girl.
Even in an interview Oshii himself said that he doesn't understand why people can't see it. (sorry i can't find the interview at the moment.)

reply

The sad thing was, I knew she was going to die before they kissed. And as soon as Fuse was handed the gun, I knew he would shoot her. The only thing that came as a surprise was the completely identifiable look of pain and despair on his face before he shot her-- a truly emotional moment, nicely animated. I think if I remember anything about that movie it'll be that very last scene, which for me makes it a successful movie.

reply

i knew she was going to die when she talked about the sea on that bridge, and yeah i agree about the ending it's unforgettable.

reply

Anyone else notice the wolfish expression on his face just before he shoots her?

reply

I only saw this once, and yes it was the wolf who shot the girl. I've taken that to mean that Fuse couldn't shake the programming he'd undergone.

Time to watch this again.

OH THE HUGE MANATEE!!!

reply

The ending had some serious balls.
Very tragic,...but beautiful at the same time.
