As far as I know, this was not a full-length movie, but merely a trailer that Richard Hatch funded privately. He was hoping to get studios interested enough to make a full movie out of it. It is not available, either commercially or for download, that I'm aware of.

Regards,
Michael

It was only a trailer 4.5 minutes long. I remember having the opportunity to see it, but I figured I'd just wait for the full length movie. D'OH that never happened. Anyway, I've never seen it downloadable on line, but here's a petition to Richard Hatch to make it available. Only 600 or so people have signed it :(

http://www.petitiononline.com/RH2002/

After reading how much effort, expense & emotion Richard Hatch put into this, I'd be happy just to see the 4.5 minutes. Who knows... maybe the fact that he hasn't released it proves that there's still hope for the REAL Galactica.

reply

it's common sense, really...the best way too generate interest would be to circulate the trailer. most BSG fans have never heard of such...the show was hugely popular. HUGE! throw the fans a bone and they'll start barking for more!

so, really, hatch would be doing himself a HUGE favor to leak this trailer all over. i mean, there's the possibility that he's lost interest? i dunno, but if he wants this movie made, he can stack the deck at the flick of a switch and post the trailer. everywhere.

reply

I wish that he or someone would leak the trailer. He can't legally release since he got special rights to make the thing in the first thing and show it at cons and to studio people. The rights don't let him release it to the net, tv or video. But if a copy happened to become avalable for download (you never know how that might happen;) it's not like they could come after him since it's his material that got "stolen" and released.

reply

Here's the reason why this trailer has never been released on the internet, from the Trivia section.

"Although public showing at sci-fi conventions is allowed, licensing restrictions prevent this short from being televised or made available over the Internet."

Only the trailer was produced, as a concept production to get producers interested. The debut of the Sci-Fi Channel's "reboot" of the series means we probably won't get a full-length "Second Coming" feature. Shame. But check out Hatch's upcoming "Great War of Magellan" for something similar to classic-style BSG.

Hatch was only out for advancing his own career. I don't understand why some just cannot comprehend that. Pre "BSG reboot", a return to TOS BSG was probably the most viable option for a career resurgence, so he pushed to get the trailer made.

If he really cared about the fans, and cared enough about getting TOS BSG back in action, he never would've signed on for the new BSG - period. I don't believe for a single second what he has to say about his decision on his website, and I think it's somewhat insulting for him to assume that people will believe it either.

reply

...but he's perfectly cast in the role of Tom Zarek. :D I'm thankful he DID accept the role.

reply

Well, considering that he wrote a very successful series of BSG novels that continue the origional storyline i'd say that he is very committed and concerned about the fans......

only advancing his own career...

like... oh - everybody on the planet?

he's trying to get work. what's wrong with that? remember, he's richard hatch. not robert redford. aside from BSG i remember him in an episode of CHiPs and not much else.

i think it shows great initiative trying to get more work by re-starting the old series. i hope he's successful.

reply

"Hatch was only out for advancing his own career."

That is usually priority #1 for everyone in an occupation, though.

reply

I think that releasing this trailer, even by "accident" would be a bad move. It's a hard enough fight trying to get the original series revived without making Universal Studios mad at the main man behind the revival. I, too, would LOVE to see the trailer, but not at the expense of hurting the chances of having a new a NON-reimagined version of my favorite sci-fi series.

It was hugely popular? It lasted one season....

reply

It was also cancelled while still doing well in the ratings, largely because it was so expensive that ABC balked at doing more. The next season they retooled and renamed the show Galactica: 1980, and it was a huge flop, it was so bad.

This is not to say that the show was perfect -- far from it. They did three great episodes, then fell into crap for most of the season, and only began to recover towards the end. But the show had potential.

reply

Well, it may have been a case where it cost more to produce than it brought in in terms of ad revenue, which in any case - scifi or not - would cause cancellation. Perhaps Galactica 1980 had cheaper production values and lower cost in terms of cast.

reply

It had much cheaper production costs, it was set and filmed, mostly, 'on earth'

reply

Every movie, every tv shows is on the internet before it premiers. It just seems strange to me that the trailer isn't to be found on the internet.

reply

It was popular with people of my generation, which also had other Larson Products such as A-Team, Knight Rider, etc but that was on a re-run. Galactica 80 failed so badly because they destroyed the story, everyone was all of a sudden at earth, Apollo was gone, Starbuck was MIA and the plot featured children that were super strong (real dodgy explaination for that involved, growing up in space affecting there muscles)cracking piece of continuity there especially as the adults weren't any stronger even though Troy (originally Boxey) had only been about 6 when he went into space. The original was definately axed because to make the plot work would have involved a budget increase, i'll explain:

The original premise abbreviated is this: The cylons are intent to destroy the human race, to that end they are pursuing the colonial fleet across the galaxies. The colonial fleet is heading for earth, to make the plot work ie: for Adama to deliver his people to salvation they would have to find earth and crush the Cylons, am i right? Good now we're agreed, what earth could aid the colonies and destroy the Cylons, certainly not the one which existed at the time of filming, that is an earth whose most powerful nation (USA) had just got its ass kicked fighting a bunch farmers in South East Asia. Obviously not, no to make it work the production cost would have doubled, futuristic earth, with futuristic soldiers, uniforms, fighter craft, tanks, buildings, guns, and all those battle scenes that would be needed equals the statement that surely resounded throught the universal board room " Hey guys lets axe that Galactica programme, before it gets any more popular"

I rest my case

reply

1. Network regulations for the timeslot of 7pm insisted that the show was aimed at young children and had to be "educational". Also acts of violence such as a blaster igniting a tree were severly limited.
2. Whilst the show had a seriously reduced budget the TV company insisted it was rushed to air, earning the crew massive overtime for working weekends but pushing production costs back upto that of the original series.
3. The show was up against 60 mins for ratings.

Personally as a young child I liked G80, not as much as with starbuck et all, but then I like lots of sci-fi and still watch old episodes of Dr Who. Bring back Blakes 7 is what I say.

reply

Well maybe they can tie it all together and when Adama and the fleet arive at earth they can hook up with Stargate command and use ancient technology to put it to the cylons.

reply

I talked to Richard Hatch at DragonCon 2001, and he told me that the original version he filmed actually lasted 40 minutes, so there is a LOT more footage than what he shows at the conventions.

reply

heehee i just signed the petition mentioned in an earlier post and i am offically the 1500 person to sign it, thats so crazy. you can all thank me later

love, jay and silent bob

I just signed the potition too!

reply

Thanks for posting the petition website, otherwise I don't think I would've ever known about it :-)

Oh, and of course, I signed it :-).

I totally agree with this. Richard Hatch must be very passionate about BSG to put in so much time and effort (and of course $$)

I wonder why the novels haven't been made into movies - perhaps this is a better way to get the follow on from the original BSG especially as the new TV version is etched into everyone's minds now. (I mean if Star Trek can have both movies and TV spin offs why not BSG).

reply

yes!!!

i like the way you think.

youtube battlestar the second coming, and you get a crappy version someone has recorded on their phone

Nothing but a trailer was ever made! Larson and Universal put stop to all production as only Larson owns the movie rights to BSG and all the rights to Battlestar Pegaus, a one time rumored spinoff series.

reply

It's on YouTube. Not the greatest quality but I liked it.
