Why you started watching

I am just curious. I think stories about why and how you start watching soap operas are interesting seeing as they are somewhat mocked in today’s society. My story is simple: the summer of my thirteenth year I came down with a terrible case of pneumonia. I was bed ridden for six weeks, with only the glow of the TV as company. I would wake every morning at eight and search through our cableless channels. After about two days of boredom I came across Laura Wright on Guiding Light. The pictures and stories enthralled me; I quickly caught up and looked for more to appease my hunger for cheesy drama. I started watching everything I could; All My Children, Days, One Life to Live, Passions, General Hospital, Bold and the Beautiful, Guiding Light and Young and the Restless. I soon became obsessed and for the rest of my sickness I watched all I could. Flipping for one channel to the other during a commercial hoping not to miss a juicy bit, six years later and my passion is still strong. I have cut back only caring about Days and GH, but my passion for drama is still lingering and only subsided by a cruel twist of fate or long lost siblings realizing they are related after they sleep together. So there is my story what is yours?

I was put on to Passions by a friend of mine in college. I always watched Days of our Lives and then changed the channel when Passions came on. She told me a little about the show, how campy and fun it was, so I decided to check it out. 5 Years later and I've seen the show up until it's last day (I've Direct TV for a while now, before Passions moved)

well, before passions i used to watch "Seinfeld"..i was obsessed with that show, then when it ending in 98 i needed a new show to be obsessed about, then one summer, the summer of 99 when i was 16.. i was in summer school..and one day i came home from school it was like the end of July or the beginning of Augest..i think it was a friday..i made pop corn and went to see what was on..i was flipping threw the channels and for a split second i seen a women (Tabitha) choking another women (charity) from her bowl to the bathroom sink, and a little person yelling at that women to stop (Timmy). for that second i changed the channel then i was like what the F was that, then i changed it back to channel 4 and i was like this is awsome!..Thats was Episode number 20.. From then on i found a new show to be obsessed over.."Passions"..that fall when i went to normal school i found that my friends liked the show too so we formed a "Passions" group, i even bought the "Hidden Passions" book when it came out but for the next 9 years i was obsessed over the show..was a little disappointed that they didn't used as much magic as i hoped..that what drawn me to the show in the first place, but it was still awesome...no one could disturb me between 2 and 3, my frinds always used to ask me to come out at that time i always said no i have to watch "Passions"..i never missed one episode.. when it moved to direct TV, i already had DTV for a few months prier when it switch, so i was excited to know that i wasn't going to miss the DTV episodes, in 2006 when it went to SciFi.. i seen the first 19 episodes that i missed and recorded the first 75 episodes on tape, i also recorded the "Spellbinding" musical episode.. 2 of the Rome episodes and the last 4 episodes and put them on DVD. but now i must move on to a differnt show .. :(.. i think my next obsestion will be "Reper", that show is tottaly awsome!

I was home sick for one week while a freshman in high school. It just so happened that it was also the first week Passions was on. While watching that first episode, I became hooked. When I returned to school, I continued to record it everyday until I graduated.

Zombiedude, do you watch True Blood on HBO? It's a pretty good show about Vampires in Louisiana although it is quite graphic.

It was the summer of 1999 and I don't really know how I ended up watching Passions but I did. I pretty much watched it on and off nearly its entire run. I am one that didn’t have DTV so i did not see any of this past last seasons. I always like the show was fairly diverse. Even if they had stereotypes. The Hispanics being the maids and house keepers for rich white folk. Compared to other soaps it always seemed to me that Passions was more equally diverse the main families came in different colors and money levels.

When it first started airing, I didn't see the big attraction (even though at that time, I was already a "Days of our Lives" fan), but a friend of mine (now ex-friend) couldn't stop talking about it and he insisted I check it out. I did and was instantly drawn to the beauty of Gwen and Charity (Liza Huber and Molly Stanton, respectively).

I watched it again for a full week when I was on March Break (when Charity was in the mental hospital over her vision of Miguel and Tabitha was committed too); since then I was definitely a fan.

Was upset over Sunset Beach ending, but while flicking through channels after school in 1999, came across a scene where Kay was plotting to lose her virginity to Miguel and I was so intrigued, I couldn't stop watching. Here I am, nearly 10 yrs later, watching it off and on, yet loving it. Particularly since this is the one and only truly diverse soap in existence. Unlike other more <respected> soaps, the non-white characters have intersecting storylines with the white characters instead of being off to the side.

I started watching the summer before I started my first full-time job. I was still fairly young and was happy to find a soap on network television that centered around young people. I would tape the episodes every day and then watch them the following day as I got ready for work. I was hooked.

I was watching the noon tv newscast from 12-1 PM, when they did a preview of Passions which was starting that day in early July. It had tons of cute actresses, so I thought, must be the most ideal time to try to get into a new show. Instant addiction, especially watching Tabitha and her Timmy. To me, Timmy, was like the original idea for "Mini-Me" . For being age 18 or so, he just came across as a little kid with smarts, and it made me reminisce about my youth :)

3 years of watching Timmy was a weekly joy. I was so angry when days would go by without a Timmy storyline.

Why battle flame wars on imdb when you could instead just watch some good TV?

When I began watching Passions, it was new to the soap opera scene. I came home one day after school and I saw this glamorous wedding. I think Kay and Miguel were getting married. Well, I think it was them, not sure. However, this wedding was not a happy event. Everyone was falling in love with someone else. Simone was fuming because Whitney and Chad were getting close. There was something with Pilar and Rebecca. They were going to fight? It was crazy! From then on, Passions was the talk, but now its the silence.

I started from Day 1. It was summer vacation and I usually spent my summer afternoons watching Day of our Lives and decided to give this a shot.

Nice thread. :)

I was put on to Passions by of friend of mines. I watched it that one time when I was at her house. Then, it was summer time and school was out and of course I was at home with nothing to do and it was around the time Passions came on. I was flipping through the channels and I saw it. I remembered watching it at my friends house. Since that day, I've been Passionated. LOL (thats my word)

I remember what was happening when I first started watching. Theresa kept saying the Cranes will save her. LOL! She was about to be killed for Julian's so called murder. You guys remember that? LOL! Good times.

I started watching in about 2003, when Gwen and Ethan were going to do invitro, and Theresa stole the embrios, and became pregnant. I would watch the last five or ten minutes or so until Ellen Degenerease would come on, and from the last ten minutes of Passions i became hooked, until about 2006 or so, and the would only watch an episode every now and then. the last episode i saw was the one where chad got shot. and then i found the finale on youtube last week. towards the end it got pretty bad.

It was summer of '00 when I was 13 and I spent a month at my dad's house and my sister always watched it, and the storyline was when Simone, Kay, Miguel, Reese (I think lol) where at Prom on the boat and Reese took a picture of Tabby holding Timmy and you couldn't see her because she was a witch. LOL I used to love how Reese would always say she was a witch and everyone thought he was crazy. I taped it and watched it everyday faithfully up until it ended on NBC and didn't follow it over to DTV. It was ridiculous, campy, and horrible, but I loved every moment of it. LOL

I started watching Passions back in May of 2007 when I was home for a whole week due to a teacher's strike at my school. There was nothing on TV, and I remember seeing the scene with Theresa and Ethan and they were in the whole "blackmailer" dilemma, and I wanted to know SO BAD who it was, and the storylines were ALL great, so I just kept watching. Ever since Passions switched over to DirecTV in September of 2007, I stopped watching it, and I have not watched any other soap since. All the others seem boring and just dull. Passions had something special to it. Now it cancelled, so it's not like I need to get caught up.
