Wrong imdb title - Swiri (1999) Discussion

It's Swiri in korean. imdb lists titles under the name used in their home countries- meaning if the movie's Italian, the title will be in Italian.

Actually, if anybody is interested... Their is an FAQ somewhere on IMDB that states the official policy. It's a bit strange... I think the official listed title is the one that appears in the credits when the film is premiered. Even if you had a Korean film, and the translator fouled up the transliteration between Korean and English, then IMDB would as a matter of policy would list the incorrect title.

Or if a film from Italy premiers in an English speaking country, if the title in the credits was in English (rather than Italian with English subs), they'd list the English title... Though the chances of this are tiny, as they would always have it in the native language (credits and all), with subs.

A strange policy, but I guess a more flexible policy would be hard to come up with, and would result in many a hair being split. ;-)

it's neither "SHIRI" nor "SWIRI". it would be impossible to correctly translate a korean proper noun, like a name or title, into english when there are sounds that are different/missing from each other's languages. the best anyone (including imdb) can do is approximate. as a korean, i think swiri is close enough, tho shiri has its merits too. maybe we can change it to shwiri, haha.

Whatever it's called, it got you to this information and posting bit, so the title is probably the original name. Not seen the film as yet but going to get it on DVD.

DVD release in Australia has 1999 release/production date...

EDIT: Not only that, but at the end of the film (just finished watching it), the subtitles are credited to SBS (Australia) 2002.

if you click on the MORE link after the release date, you can see that in 1999 it was released in S.Korea.

Yep, the cinema release in Korea was in 1999. It took a while to come to DVD (and I imported one of the first Bitwin 2 disc DVD versions from Korea in early 2003)...

'Shiri' is the Hong Kong English title. It was released in the US also as 'Shiri' which has now become the film's official international title.

Maybe it took some time for the movie to gain popularity, giving it a reason to be released in other countries.
I had bought the dvd before 2003, in a small Korean store.

Granted I had to look it up under Kim Rae Won to find it because they're using a strange romanization.

The title as it's given in Hangul at the start of the film transliterates as SWI-RI. If you break it down to its constituent parts, it's SUI-RI - but it's conventional to write UI as WI. Hence SWIRI.

The S in Korean is only pronounce as a SH before a high, front vowel (owing to palatalisation). Therefore, the title as given here on IMDb is correct.
