Does the DVD have more or less picture than the version shown on TV?

Yes, the picture quality is actually very good. I couldn't believe it when I saw this on DVD. I loved watching it when I was younger and was always fascinated by the storyline. The cast was also surprisingly good for a Disney Channel movie. Ryan Merriman should have been a much, much bigger star--hopefully he'll do more films in the future.

I've read that it's presented in 1.78:1 widescreen. Does that mean they added detail to the left and right sides or removed the top and the bottom?

I honestly have no idea. I don't really pay attention to that kind of stuff. As long as it's technically presented in widescreen, I'm good with it :) But since it's just a Disney Channel TV movie that probably hasn't had huge sales, I'm sure they did what was easy and just removed the top and bottom portions.

Now that you mention it, some parts didn't seem quite right...like the actor's face was cut off from the chin down in certain shots. Makes me think that they just took out the top and bottom parts of the picture.
