How did real estate and construction make any profit off this house?

Your watching the show and this house is suppose to be a prototype; however, I am sure it cost a fortune to make. If they just gave this house away, how would they be able to even recoup to costs of it?

Marketing cost - they use it to generate hype for their future smart houses.... all that 'free' publicity for the giveaway and reporters

Yeah, but think about it.

Marketing cost. If they build a house or many more of that caliber, where are they getting the money to build it? It's not like they have a bunch of money stashed somewhere to pull from. It definitely saves on marketing; however, it would do nothing until an actual house is built. They need to be able to get money from the electronics, wood, and supplies that go into making a house.

You're talking about a massive construction firm that is probably sitting on 10s if not 100s of millions. They can throw away one house in order to sell 100 more. The lady and the guy weren't the people that were funding the house they were just the engineers, that's why they had to show it to their boss first and finish on time for a press release.

So we are assuming that this construction firm or real estate firm has profits from the older model houses they made? Could be.

I assume the whole point of giving away this house was free so that a real family could test out the kinks so that way if anything went wrong, they could fix them once they set the houses for mass production.
