Why Breitling?

They should have used a Tag Heuer or Rolex. I had a Breitling Navitimer a few years ago, and it didn't keep good time. Tag Heuer is much better.

I don't think it had to do with anything, but tradition. As it goes, the Breitling Navitimer was the traditional watch they had used for years. According to the book, rule # 28 " ....traditional shall be kept until amended by the committee on certain rules " That's actually not accurate..word for word...of the rule but that is the accurate idea and number of rule according to the Skulls handbook.

I do, however, agree. A Tag Heuer or Rolex are better quality as well as a citizen, which are relatively reasonable in price, my husband's was $ 250.00 and it's run forever. Simplistic and affordable.

Citizen are definitely a good buy for the money. So are Seiko for that matter. Pound for pound, I don't think you can find a better watch than a Tag Heuer. They take a pounding, and you never have to touch them. I don't think I've ever had to reset my Tag, except for daylight savings time. I have a Rolex submariner that was a gift from a few years back, and that thing has to be reset almost weekly. Since the Rolex was about $4000 more than the Tag, you would think it would keep better time.

What's really plesant it to hear someone with knowledge of the finer things such as nice watches. My husband has purchased watches up to 10,000, but would never do it again, You can just find yourself a very nice, workable and reliable for the hundreds of dollars we pay now. I guess it's everyone's opionion.

Thanks for sharing, though!

You know what watches keep great time? Candy-colored Swatches and Casios with calculators on them--but you'd never catch a respectable gentleman wearing such a ridiculous instrument. Anyone with any sort of taste could easily understand "Why Breitling?"

reply

Cute comment. I like your take on that. My husband is 56 years old, I am 36. And, honestly of everything he's had and the personalities he and I have we most definitely would wear those at times. Thanks for the reminders...lol...he and I had a really nice laugh remembering those kinds of things we've done.

Actually those Casio calculator watches aren't bad for $11.50. . . but I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one. Yes, I'm a snob. I still think the new Skulls would have been more impressed if they'd had a cool Tag Heuer or even an Omega to cauterize their brands. (The little "hiss" as the watch was put on was a nice touch by the way. I'd love to see what happened when these guys tried to remove their watches later and the skin from their wrist came off with it.) Unless you're going scuba diving after the cocktail party, most of the features on that Breitling Navitimer are useless.

Breitling sucks. No person with class would wear them. Tag heur are ok but still feels cheap and rolex are for people who sell used cars (except the daytona). They should have used Cartier or IWC instead.

reply

True, there are some Tags that are chintzy, but their better quality stuff is hard to beat. Any watch where the case is cut from a solid piece of steel, with a screw-in crown, and a face made from crushed sapphire rather than glass is a top-quality watch. You can usually tell just by feeling the weight. The crushed sapphire face is my favorite feature. I can't even imagine how many times I've slammed my watch into something and the face wipes clean every time.

After 4 years the battery in my Tag died so I brought it to my local jeweler for a new one. He said he couldn't change the battery, it had to be done by a Tag service center. So I mailed my watch off and a month and $115 later I had a new $6 battery in my watch. Ofcourse I had the consolation of wearing my Submariner more ofter during that time.

reply

Yeah, I never understood the logic behind that. I guess they figure if you can afford $2000 for a watch you'll gladly fork over $115 for a battery change. A colleague of mine bought a BMW a few months ago and was astonished when they wanted $200 to change the oil at the dealership. Same philosophy I guess.

At the risk of knocking anyone's particular tastes, any watch with quartz movement, though accurate, has a negatively short life expectancy. Changing batteries means opening the case, which subjects the innards to oxidation and posssibly faulty part replacement and questionable sealing at any but the OEM certified dealerships. Having said that, my father has a Seiko with kinetic movement that has a case cut from a single block of stainless steel; this watch was manufactured in 1968, which makes it significantly older than I am. It is ugly as hell too. This watch has never needed opening as the kinetic movement allows it to charge as you wear it. It can sit in a drawer for 10 years (it has) and pick it up, shake it and it is ready to wear for another 20. Breitling has a good line of self-winding mechanical automatics with similar technology as the Kinetics, which would lend these lines similar life-expectancy, aside from the leather bands. I am unsure if the Navitimer model is quartz or automatic, but obviously the difference would be a big one (to me at least). As was stated previously, Rolex's keep notoriously poor time.

I have not worn a digital watch since high school, though cheap and practical expect to replace them every couple years. Personally, I own an Omega automatic (James Bond is a helluva salesman) for formalities ($1200), but wear one of two Seiko Kinetics with different hue facings everyday, which are about half the price, and are going on their 10th year of unstoppable movement. I never have to set them, they keep near perfect time (they lose less than two seconds a year, compared to a Rolex which can lose 5 minutes) and the perpetual feature changes daylight savings time automatically. All are steel in case and band for longevity. Even with the additional wear, my money is on the Kinetics outlasting the Omega from experience. If you are gonna spend multiple thousands of dollars on a watch, make sure it is NOT quartz movement. That is, if you care about making an heirloom out of it.

P.S. My next watch will be a cheaper Citizen titanium solar ($250). A friend of mine who works outdoors, has one and for the last five years I have watched him abuse the hell out of the thing (tuning cars and such), without failure or maintenance. Its not pretty but man it takes a licking. Over time I have learned, as many of you have too apparently, that value is not intrinsic to a price tag.

the cause of my ambivalence is the effect of your own--me

This is one of the dumbest and most ignorant posts I have ever seen about watches. johnnyamex clearly has absolutely no clue about anything related to timepieces.

Correct.

Breitlings are much more prestigious than Tags. I don't think most people who wear them care much about how well they keep time. I have a digital watch that I wear when I workout or surf that keeps better time than my Breitling.

reply

They should have given them Timex. Hahaha.

I've always liked Casio G-Shock watches. I know they're not considered classy by any means. But it works and can take a beating which is good for me. I've had it since 2008 and I like it.

Although looking at Casio's website for new watches I'm disappointed they're making brightly colored plastic crap and marketing themselves towards the flannel, beanie, thick framed glasses, and skinny jeans wearing hipster kids.

reply

I too am partial to Casio G-Shocks as well and started wearing one
in 2004. Prior to this brand of watch I wore Swatch and then
Timex Ironman for many years. Now my current Casio is a non-digital
analog model which is dark blue plastic and like you've mentioned
I also don't care for the new plastic watches that they are
offering. Now that scene where the new skull members each receive
a new Breitling watch. Well obvious product placement and the
manufacturer paid the studio to feature its watches and how funny
it would have been if the watches had been G-Shocks instead!

Just because you had one that didn't keep good time, doesn't mean it's a bad company.

I believe they were commissioned to make a 24 hour watch for the first space flight.

Good company, better than Tag for my tastes, but it's more opinion on both our parts than fact.

reply

I guess they were sponsors of The Skulls. Maybe Mr. Breitling was a member himself.
