How did Korine pitch this idea to a studio? He didn't really have a screenplay, so how did he get funding for this film?

Think of it in terms of the popular music industry-
some kid writes a hit song for a major artist, then makes his own edgy groundbreaking album- why not throw some more money his way and see what comes out next!?
Actually, Korine did have a script for the film but abondoned it to give it a more realistic (improvised) quality. If you look at the trivia section, you should see that.
