did she mean to fall??

I'm just curious....was she trying (subconsciously or otherwise) to get rid of the baby, or was she just being STUPID by ice skating when she was pregnant?? I am not sure what the director was trying to convey with that part...did he ever explain his reasoning there?

reply

i don't remember ever thinking it was anything more than an accident, obviously nobody is in their right mind in this movie, so I would go with "being STUPID by ice skating when she was pregnant"

reply

are YOU stupid?, OF COURSE SHE DIDNT MEAN TOO

reply

Maybe she did it subconsciously, but I don’t really think that’s the case because she seemed to care a lot for her brother, and I guess, wouldn’t mind caring his child.

reply

This was the worst part of the film. It sure looks like she meant to because she had plenty of time to move and fall on her side. It was the worst bit of acting that I have ever seen. My film class laughed.

reply

I laugh at your "film class" (you can believe it's that if you want).

reply

Oooh, good one.

Idiot.

reply

you think that was the worst part of the film? urmmm...okay...can you point to a good part in the film?

reply

i never thought of her doing it on purpose. i really do not believe she did. i agree with whoever said she seemed to care a lot about her brother and her baby. she REALLY seemed to care about the baby.

i didn't see anything "wrong" with the scene...

I seriously doubt anyone would put themselves in that much agony, both physically and mentally, on purpose.

reply

Yeah, kudos to Chloe Sevigny's acting, becuz it sounded like it REALLY, REALLY FKKING HURT. I've never heard anyone scream in so much pain in a film. Then again, I've never seen such a vividly vrilliant portrayal of schizophrenia since One Flew. A brilliant and unforgettable film.

I agree that it was a powerful moment. As she was skating, did you not feel nervous? Where you not thinking: "don't fall don't fall don't fall..." it is EMOTION here that Korine is trying to convey. His films fit in a sort of aesthetic niche...sight and sound films, films that care less about plot and moreabout catharsis...setting a mood...making you feel an emotion. In this case, uncomfortable.

I was really loving this movie until this scene. I just find it too hard to believe, just like the scene with Julien having no problem carrying a dead baby out of the hospital.

I thought this scene was very intense... I did not see any problems with her acting. I actually think Chloe Sevigny (sp?) is a wonderful actres...
Anyway- as to whether she did it on purpose or not- I think it was an accident... Foreshadowed by the scene with the pogo stick. I do not think there was supposed to be any intention in it.

reply

actually- i think the miscarriage happened before she fell anyway...

reply

it was just an accident

Well what I personally take from the movie is that the siblings were locked in their's father exeptions from them ,who are never filled. The thing the father seem to admire the most was the un-humanly flexible ice skater girl he kept watching. You can see the brothers trying to do her moves around the house, in the strais, probably because their father told them to ,or maybe not.
After failing her father with the harp and being labaled as a slut by him, Pearl , knowingly or subcounisly or in a total metaporically way, uses the last resort to gain some fatherly love by trying to do her father most loved thing.she fails, and also kills in the way something she and Juilen loved or wanted to love-the baby.

you ruined the movie for me, you pretty much gave away the heads-up from the surprise party that was the end of the ice skating scene. thank you. please be more careful on future posts.

Typically if people are reading the forums and posting, they've already SEEN the movie. No need to get nasty.

reply

not true. and typically if someone is going to reveal a spoiler, they write "spoilers". and the poster to which you are responding was not nasty at all with his/her request.

when she fell I don't think she was making sounds of pain due to the fall.
it sounded more like she was supposed to be going to into labour,as if the fall was supposed to have induced it.
Also maybe the baby's death wasn't due to only the fall ~ but also since it was (supposedly)the product of a full sibling conception(ie:inbred).
