Better than you remember it being

I revisited this movie for the first time since it originally came out and ... well ... I feel like I "get" what the filmmakers were going for more now than I did at the time.

It's Kevin Smith meets "Freaks and Geeks."

I love Ben Foster, but think he's the problem with this movie. He's just not right for the part. Put someone else in that role and I think the movie would've been seen much differently. Heath Ledger? Ryan Gosling? Imagine that!? I bet they were both considered at some point.
