There's lots of explanations for the ending

1. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. His brother in law says. "Wow. That's such a relief. My lottery ticket is in there and it's a winner. I always play my granddaughter's birthday." Victor decides to try and steal the ticket.

2. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. A short while later, his wife rings him and says. "Wow. Did you hear about Avery? He won the lottery. He always plays his granddaughter's birthday." Victor decides to try and steal the ticket.

3. Victor hears that Avery has won the lottery, and that the winning ticket was the granddaughter's birthday. He then receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. A few minutes later, he thinks "Wait a minute. What if the ticket is in the wallet." Victor decides to try and steal the ticket.

4. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. His brother in law says. "Damn. I didnt know I'd lost it. Can you go and get it for me." Victor collects the wallet (pretending to be Avery just for simplicity) and calls Avery. By now Avery knows the lottery numbers and asks Victor to confirm that the ticket in the wallet matches his grand-niece's birthday. It doesnt. Victor decides to try and help Avery by getting the ticket.

5. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. His brother in law says. "Damn. I didnt know I'd lost it. Can you go and get it for me." Victor collects the wallet (pretending to be Avery just for simplicity). He is certain that Avery always plays the same numbers and notes that the ticket in the wallet does not match. He calls his wife and she confirms. Based on the suspicious behaviour of Tepper, it isnt hard for Victor to work it all out. Victor decides to try and help Avery by getting the ticket.

6. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. His brother in law says, "Come with me". When they get there, Avery says, "You're bigger than me. You go and get it." When Victor eventually comes out, and explains what happened, Avery says, "I've got an idea which will freak him out."

7. Victor receives a call about the wallet, and calls his brother in law. His brother in law says. "Wow. That such a relief. My lottery ticket is in there and it's a winner. I always play my granddaughter's birthday." Victor puts the phone down and tells his work colleague, or house mate, or whatever. That person waits till Victor has gone (or conks Victor over the head) and listens to the message Tepper had left.

There's other possibilities too, as well as variations of the above. So why all the threads saying that there's no possible explanation for the ending?
