how to make this move good in just afew edits

below is a post someone else made that i thought was really clever and it really would have made the plot of the movie work better. but to do this would have needed afew changes in the plot.

The person who rang Tepper's bell early in the film claiming to be Avery was in fact the real Avery. Tepper buzzed him in (this explains how he was in the building at the end), but he was detained somewhere in the building by the police, who were ordering a lock-down because they were looking for a criminal "fake Avery" loose in the building. JE Jones is that criminal. He's running from the cops. When he comes up the stairs, I'm fairly certain Tepper says to him "Are you Avery Phillips." JE Jones didn't say "I am Avery Phillips." The criminal, whose #1 priority right now is to evade the police, has no idea who this Avery Phillips is, but he plays along in order to hide in the apartment (this explains why he seems to not want to leave right away, he's waiting until the police leave). Tepper hands him a wallet and suddenly this is turning into the criminal's lucky day! So he starts ad-libbing, making up BS stories as he goes, buying time but while doing this he noticed Tepper is hiding something "being a con artist he can sense it". The charade seems to be working until the police knock at the door. He had just plays it cool, the police would never have even questioned him plus he has the wallet "cut out the parking ticket think". They would have just looked around and left). Well, he gets away with it and continues to become more aware of what Tepper is hiding and the story continues as we know it until he leaves with the ticket, laughing hysterically. What a lucky day for this criminal! He successfully evaded the police and walks away with a autographed Derek Jeter card and a cool 6 mil, and it only cost him a few stiches in the head. Now that the police have ended the lock-down and left, the real Avery, who Tepper had buzzed in a few hours earlier, is now allowed to go up to the apartment. He has no idea what has transpired and expects to get back his wallet, not realizing the man he probably just passed in the hall has just walked away with it, along with his winning lottery ticket! THE END

for this to happen all you would need to do is re-shoot the scene with the cops. instead of fake avery get up to hide he says put and when the cops question why he is there he explains they check the wallet...no photo they do a background check he is clean "cut the parking tickets crap out" then they leave to go back to looking for the guy they think that are looking of

cut out the stuff to do with bolan knowing him as a fireman, he can still pretend to have been one just make it of him just spinning bs to cover his tail

get rid of the guy getting caught in the laundry shoot or whatever it was

then finally show the scene where the real avery shows up then have it cut to a flashback style scene of fake avery walking in the door right the same time as avery have maybe a little thing where the real avery asks thinking the guy lives there "do you know where unit whatever is, i lost my wallet" fake avery says "just down there to the left" in the hope that he knows the guy doesn't have id so if he can get to that unit before he does then he will be safe"
cuts back and forth to a them talking at the door as the place is being raided by the cops on lower levels, him stalling to make a phone call, play darts, play poker
then jump cuts of all the stuff fake avery was picking up on Tep to find what he was hiding then the cut of him laughing as he walks past the real avery on the stairwell *CREDITS*

Agreed. As it is, I'm having a hard time with who the fake Avery is, how'd he know about the bus driver thing. Also, as is it is, the twist is really unnecessary.

Good ideas.

Your whole premise is unambiguously false. This is the secene:
Avery walks up the stairs.
They see each other.
Avery: Tepper?
Tepper: Yeah.
Avery: "I'm Avery Phillips. I can't tell you how much I apprecate this. New York City, this doesn't happen. You're a good soul".
