"You're playing and you think everything is going fine. Then one thing goes wrong. And then another. And another. You try to fight back, but the harder you fight, the deeper you sink. Until you can't move... you can't breathe... because you're in over your head. Like quicksand."

His fear was responsibility.

A fear of fear, an immobilizing panic attack, like a deer who freezes in the middle of the road when it sees headlights. It is, perhaps, the most helpless feeling there is and the only thing you can do is ride it out and wait until the panic subsides.

Quicksand is the opposite of being "in the zone". It happens in life, in sports, in work. Its just being in a rut in steroids. Quicksand is not the fear. He's saying he's scared of being in that situation.

How many times have you seen a great football team start a game bad and you keep waiting for them to wake up and start playing until you finally realize they are just spiraling down the drain that game and nothing seems to work. Thats quicksand.
