Maybe I'm missing something, but why do they make a big deal out of water rationing? They say they only have enough gas canisters to melt water for so long, but why do they need to do that at all?
Why can't they just chip off some ice and put it in their mouths?
I cant remember the details, but if u watch touching the void, they explain that eating snow actually dehydrates you or does more damage than good, anyway...

Eating snow and ice will also lower your body temperature.

The problem is that you can't really eat a lot of it without getting very cold. Just try it yourself, a few bites is ok, but your mouth would soon get numb.
As they already needed all the heat they had, it wouldn't work for very long.
It dehydrates you as your body is expending calories to melt the show etc. This would be the case either melting it in your mouth or your hands.
With no caloric intake you are making your situation worse.
