Where did it all go wrong?

Any die hard fans (like myself) of this classic will have been so let down by Resi 5 - I personally like Resi2 the best but nothing captured the survival horror feel like the first ever instalment! And despite the old Resident Evil's being somewhat dated now I still consider them on of my all time favourite games. Where did it all go wrong? What were the key aspects of this game that made it so good!! I personally think the surroundings helped allot the whole creepy mansion setting simply can not be beat!!

reply

Agreed! The more recent games have been 'action thrillers' (much like the pony films are) rather than 'survival horror'. We don't want overly action-oriented plots about President's daughters or bioterrorists overrunning African villages. We also don't want voluminous cutscenes and FMVs. Resident Evil was and should be about isolation, zombies and monsters, and it should be held together by a realistic, spooky setting and a simple, B-movie style plot. Another key aspect of all the early games were settings full of faded, crumbling opulence - from the zombie-filled mansion to the ruined RPD building. Sets which are realistic, recognisable and yet somehow apocalyptic are huge Resi factors. Bring them back!

Any new RE game wouldn't be as good as the old ones. I liked RE 4 and 5, but after seeing how 5 ended (with Wesker and all) I'd rather not see them try and continue. Without Wesker it just wouldn't be Resident Evil.

Crapcom I mean Capcom has pretty much safe to say has losted it. The Resident Evil games will never be up to the level of the first three Resident Evil Games. All the magic behind the first three games are just beyond words they are just the best. Sadly Capcom just had to lose their magic not only with games but with the movies as well.

i always got scared *beep* from RE1.. dunno why, probably cuz i was so young and didn't understand how B it really was.. the acting and all.. tried to play it again on the DS but they added some REALLY annoying things.. like those SPOILERS damned crows in the 2nd floor to the left, overseeing the dining room.. with the controls i cannot hit them for the life of me ;D

reply

Sadly it's turned from a survival horror into a shoot-'em-up. Tedious!

They haven't lost it....RE5 tied up the story of the games nicely....now they can reboot or start with a new storyline.....and to whoever said the magic of the first 3 games...CV was still pretty damn bad ass.

I think RE 4 is when it started going wrong.

RE 3 was still very good in my opinion and Code Veronica for me is an absoulete masterpiece, it's my favourite of all the Resident evils.

And RE 2 was excellent as well.

I have but haven't finished it yet- the atmosphere started disappearing as did the gripping story.

Which game are you talking about, RE 3 or Code Veronica ?

Remember, there might be some MOMENTARY DISCOMFORT.

Ah I see. I am currently replaying RE 3 and although I still really enjoyed I think I see where you are coming from. The story was a bit flat.

The story was just basically trying to escape from Raccon City whilst being hunted relentlessly by the Nemesis. I think they maybe overused Nemesis a little bit in the game, I think he showed up a few too many times. The first few times was brilliant as he was geuinely very scary and very difficult but eventually I think it got to the point where everyone was just like "Oh when is he gonna show up next ?"

Unlike Mr X in RE 2, I think he had the perfect amount of appearances whilst still being scary and unpredictable.

I really do Love Jill, she's my second favourite character and I actually quite liked Carlos, I wish we could have seen a more of him.

But someone made a good point, I thought it was absouletly fantastic that you could explore more of Raccon City though it did seem a bit strange how you encountered practically no civillians (except Dario in the warehouse at the start) I think that might have disappointed people.

Ans although I liked Nicholai okay, I couldn't help but feel like he was just a rejected, water-downed version of Wesker.

Remember, there might be some MOMENTARY DISCOMFORT.

I'd say I got annoyed when Capcom started to try to weave the style of the Paul Anderson movies (matrix ripoff!) into their games. Resident Evil 4 was when I knew the future was going to be bleak. Don't get me wrong, RE4 is a great and fun game, but it's not survival horror. Gone were the dark suspenseful moments, zombies, back tracking, complex puzzles and reading, and the general sense of dread and horror.
I get really irritated every time there's a cut scene with slow motion matrix fights, especially with Wesker in RE5 (who looks like Neo).

To me it's similar to any franchise that overstays its welcome. The sequels go down hill trying to broaden their horizons to get more sales. Look at how most comic book movies did after part 2.

Yes, survival horror is a rather small audience, but that was what was so great about it. It was its own thing. Survival horror required some brains and nerves of steel to play. Remember when Gears of War was popular? That's when RE5 came soon after and they're quite similar, in a bad way. Business is business...

I wouldn't be surprised if Resident Evil games will eventually become 'Call of Evil' or 'Resident Titanfall' where you battle as monsters, good guys, or matrix like Umbrella mercenaries in an online multiplayer only game. And we will probably see the green, red, and blue herb disappear in favor of a take cover healing system (ugh).

I personally never understood why dedicated single player games eventually must have a multiplayer element squeezed in (RE5, Batman Arkham Origins).

I agree, to me it's simple. Resident Evil 4, as fantastic as it was, is to blame. I knew when I played it, and I did enjoy it but I said,"uh oh." RE 1-3 is great, I loved CvX, even though it used to own me until I learned...the knife is your friend and one bad mo-fo. (The knife in Code Veronica is sick...I used to always run out of ammo).

After RE4, they all copied that formula and we got the path we are on now.

4 Resident Evil is a decent to good game on it's own...but it is a terrible Resident Evil title. It is a mighty shame that it started the downfall of the series.

It all started to go wrong with RE4. It may have been a good game in its own right, but it wasn't a Resident Evil game. It ditched all the elements that made it survival horror and great in the first place in favour of it becoming virtually a straight out shooter complete with a shed load of ammo and healing littered everywhere. This of course followed on with RE5 and RE6 that essentially followed the same path.

What I loved about the first three is how clever they were designed. Some of the puzzles were truly challenging. There wasn’t a lot of wasted space in the games. Almost every room had a purpose and a task you needed to complete there in order to advance the game. It really created an immersive gaming experience. You spent a lot of time running around but there was always a purpose to it. There was always a key you needed to find, a puzzle you needed to solve, etc. so it held your interest. Compare that to something like The Last of Us where you spend a lot of your time just running around with no other purpose than to get to the next set of bad guys. That gets boring no matter how great the graphics might be.

Sadly there haven’t been many horror/survival games in recent years (that I’ve played at least) that can touch the first three Resident Evils in terms of overall plot, layout, puzzles, etc. Dead Space came close though.

I agree with most posters here are saying. I believe the problem started with Resident Evil 4. It wasn't a bad game, nor was 5 in my opinion, but it just didn't seem like your traditional Resident Evil game. Some things DID disappoint me. Such as the end of Umbrella, the gameplay where the camera moves with the character (I get motion sickness), there are no zombies, a religious cult is behind the biohazard this time, and it wasn't as scary as the PS1-era Resident Evils. It did have the same graphics as Remake and 0, but the camera moving thing wasn't right.

After Resident Evil 4, I believe the game series got worse, not better. 5 was OK with me, but again, it wasn't your traditional Resident Evil game; every Resident Evil game as of Resident Evil 6 and on was a disappointment because of you have to move the camera manually instead of it following you automatically. I didn't care too much for the camera moving either, but having to control it along with the play character is just too difficult and confusing. I liked the set camera angles from the PS1 Resident Evils. Also after Resident Evil 4, the game music wasn't all that good. My favorite Resident Evil game soundtrack was the original non-Duel Shock Director's Cut; it gave you that haunted house feel in the mansion.

I fully agree that RE4 is where things changed. I was never that huge of a fan, and despite the general consensus I thought 5 was just as good as 4 for the most part. I hated the way Leon blocked a lot of the screen and tank controls in 3D suck way worse than in previous games.

I'm glad to see that I am not alone in missing the puzzles. They were a lot of fun and you had to use your brain a bit so it wasn't just action or horror. Really hope the new game brings more of this back.
