In this case, the term "remake" is not applicable as this is an adaptation from a Llosa Vargas 1973 novel. As loosely quoted (losses in translation) in a 2012 interview, Vargas had this to say about the version made in 1975 (filmed in Dominican Republic for political reasons and banned in Peru until 1981) "It is a movie that it is not necessary to see by any means, and if it should cross your path and you hold me in any esteem, please do not see, because in addition I also act. It is a frightfully bad movie and everything is a my fault". Obviously this early adaptation was an embarrassment and the author clearly says so with both humor and humility as, in addition to co-directing, he actually performed as well. Bear in mind this the guy that infamously punched Gabriel García Márquez in the face at a famous art museum. To funny! According to the author himself, the work is based on facts, as he was able to verify them in 1958 and in 1962 when he travelled to the Peruvian jungle. You can see part of this release on YouTube with the search "PANTALEON Y LAS VISITADORAS 1975.avi" omitting the quotation marks. The soundtrack alone is hilarious! The interview (excerpt)is likewise available with the search string "Vargas Llosa filma Pantaleón y las visitadoras". Good luck finding an original, let alone the subtitles! I've tried.
