The Ending? *spoilers*

I'm not a follower of D&D, so i guess that would explain why i dont know, but I really wish i understood the ending. Could someone explain it to me?

reply

It's over-the-top confidence gone bad. They had thought that more people would like Dungeons & Dragons so that they could make a sequel, because there was a trilogy in mind.

However, as we all know, this B movie did not make it as well as they had thought. So, the sequel is not going to be made, and instead, a new sequel of sorts is on its way. But it won't be based on characters from this movie, save for Damhodar.

So the reasoning is, to tie it in with the sequel, however, the movie didn't do well enough to make a sequel.

Oh, didn't see this message...

Dungeons & Dragons the sequel is called:

Dungeons & Dragons 2: The Elemenetal Might, and as for the third, noone knows the name yet. Ridley, Snails, Marina, Elwood, and Norda (our heroes) will not be returning in Dungeons & Dragons 2, as they were cut by the studio.

The only character who will remain the same as before is Damhodar, although, he's now an undead Necromancer, as I understand it, so it depends on how you define "remain the same."

Expect to be unimpressed, though. All of the goofy antics, and silly moments will be gone, replaced by a bunch of battle-hardened adventurers, who can probably act no better than the actors of this movie. We all know, Bruce Payne hams it up much too much when he plays Damhodar.

Yet again, you attack the director. Why don't you get off your high horse, and leave him alone? You're such a little prick. I don't even care what you have to say, leave the director alone.

[deleted]

I had no idea that he raised the $35 million himself. That is ambition. What is he doing now?

reply

Directing movies under a studio name. Just look up Courtney Solomon.

reply

why were Ridley, Snails, Marina, Elwood, and Norda (our heroes) cut from the film?

reply

To sum it up, they wanted to make another Dungeons & Dragons movie, but, they didn't think that they could save it with the characters from the original. A foolish thought, really. Mind you, it's going to be no better in this case, because all they've done is changed the color of the dragons, and Damhodar's choice of crew. It's going to be on par with the original.

reply

Oh, and as for what it portents...

Snails is dead, yes, however, he's in another world (dun ask me...), and so when Ridley and his ragtag crew of noobs starts to walk away, Snails imbues the eye of the dragon with energy to summon Ridley to where he is.

Don't ask how.

Anyway, suffice to say, after the eye of the dragon is imbued, they all touch it like pedophiles on Kindergardeners, and the stone is sapped of all its energy, and they are magically transported via a Wish spell to wherever it is that Snails is located.

I totally agree, the original ending was 1000000% better, and would have given the movie better ratings in the box office too...

The ending is one of those things that outraged the moviegoers and pissed them off... I mean, yeah, there are other parts that would easily piss an audience off... But none as much as the ending...

Hey, you forgot Down in the Bog, and Deep in the Forest... It's a quadrilogy... Heheh.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of "Evil Dead", Bruce Campbell probably would have been
a pretty good Ridley Freeborn at one time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm, I can see it, but, I think that Justin Whalin suits the role better... Bruce Campbell would foil the puzzles in B movie fashion, or use the stunt double... Justin Whalin actually DID the stunts, like the "maze."

Which reminds me...

HOW IS IT A FREAKIN' MAZE, WHEN IT'S A LINEAR SET OF ROOMS? Part of a Maze is that it has all kinds of directions to go, and only one right direction... This was more of a test of thievesmanship... "If you can get through here without getting scythed by the blades, you get to move on and avoid getting torched. After which, you need to figure out how to crack that vault, do it wrong and you die and the vault is forever sealed, do it right and I get the eye of the dragon.."

[deleted]

No, that's not what I'm saying. Justin Whalin is a terrible actor. But then, Bruce Campbell's not the most amazing actor you'll ever find either. I love Bruce Campbell, but, he doesn't fit this character for a few reasons.

Justin Whalin is nimble, he has the attitude, and the character is tailored to the way he can react to things. If Bruce Campbell was playing Ridley Freeborne, chances are the maze scene would have to be cut, because Bruce wouldn't and couldn't do it, or he'd do it in the fashion of he gets the crap beat out of him (thus ruining it anyway). Bruce Campbell's great, but, he just doesn't have the agility. And likewise, he doesn't suit the character for the way the character is written.

Bottom line, Justin Whalin and Ridley Freeborne were made for each other. Courtney Solomon wrote the script to accomodate his best friend to be the main character. And likewise, the character has been tailored to be suited for the actor.

Bruce Campbell's just not agile. He's the guy who walks in with a shotgun and a chainsaw, and walks out with a few bruises and little ammo left, but with the enemy's head in his hand.

It was made "more open."

The script wasn't taylored to Whalin, and the two didn't get to know each other until after Justin was cast in the movie. It was during the production that they became good friends.

But he's right, Justin was perfect for the role, and out of everyone that read for it (and a good number did) he was the best match to the character.

Sure they knew each other before production. Justin had read for the part, and was pretty much the first person cast, long before production started. The script he read from though wasn't much different, character wise, than the one that was shot.

Ridley was always seen as a swashbuckler type. Rogue-ish.

Snails was a role that truely changed more out of the actor playing it. Oddly enough, both he and his brother Sean read for the part, and another actor that read for the part that REALLY wanted to be in the movie, as he claimed he was a huge D&D fan and still played on the occassional weekend, was Scrubs star Donald Faison.

reply

Sorry. My apologies. :)

Next time look at how it's nested. He wasn't apologising to you, he was apologising to me for referring to me as a he.

reply

At the time Faison was really only known for Clueless, and some other smaller roles, while Marlon was much more well known. Remember, the cast had to be sold to people like Silver, as capable of carring the picture and help sell. At the time, Marlon could help do that.

reply

Marlon had to rush to shoot his scenes since he was filming another movie at the time. So if they to rewrite any of Snails scenes they couldn't since Marlon couldn't do it. So maybe getting another actor might to play Snails might have been better.

reply

There wasn't really a huge rush with Marlon. He flew out to film Scary Movie 2 I believe and flew back to continue work on D&D.

Most of the rewrites were budget related, and didn't effect Snail's character that much.

reply

Not a problem.

Now a question... Which is your favorite polyhedral die? Is it the elusive d4? Or perhaps the average joe d6? Perhaps the funny d8? Or is it the ever mysterious d10? How about the cunning d12? Or is the almight d20?

reply

Oh, only the truest geeks know of the greatest die, the rare, elusive d100!

reply

I wasn't going to mention the d100, because it's oh so hard to find, and not many know of it...

I'm *STILL* trying to find one...

reply

I like the d30 myself. I feel more important by just holding it.

reply

Nothing wrong with Bruce Payne! I hope he has that tranny look again in D&D 2.

Darn I sort of wish I didn't read this thread lol, well the movie was alright in spite of its good points & faults. I haven't played D&D in at least 10 years due to the people I played with all moved out of town, I've got a d100 that was part of a color coded noob set, along with gold & red sets, never had any campaigns but got a lot of peripherals; DM handbook, players handbook & other character classes books, tome of magic, etc. someday I hope to get back into semi-hardcore playing, until then it's the MMORPG's.

reply

2 ten sided dice beat a d100 anyday!
