D+D Players

How many of you actually play Dungeons and Dragons? Did you like the movie? I've played for a couple years now, tho not by hardcore rules, and I enjoyed the movie.

No it's not a great movie of epic proportions, but I think it is cute. By cute I mean like the new Cursed movie. It's not bad, but I think that when they made the movie, they knew they weren't going to have a smash hit and just had fun with it. I like that. But I want to know how many players have seen the movie and if you liked it.

It would be kind of hard to get the kind of D+D epic some people want. People would see it as a Lord of the Rings rip-off.

reply

Although I like/ play many rpgs, D&d is not at the top of my list,
I think that Forgotten Realms is by far the best fantasy setting out there, it's just let down by the D&D system, (I could work around everthing but the class's and the dumb ass BAB)

I think the people who will get the most from this film are people who have never played, almost all other players will have their own ideas about this, which will make for a tough crowd,

I think the line of thought (all) the producers had with this film was something more along the lines of star wars, and you never know it could of happen if they haddn't of had their money cut,

I thought Lord of the rings was a bit dry, don't get me wrong it was still a good film (and there will be others)

but give me the rights to Forgotten Realms and half the budget and I will give you a film of substance,

I know it's kinda late in the game (no pun intended), but could someone tell me what it was that AnonymousGuy said? It seems that his posts have been deleted.

Bahahaha, thats soo funny, but no seriously you moron, don't come here and make fun of something that is far beyond your pathetic scope of intelligence so you can make your pitiful existence all the more interesting. Besides you do realize that Vin Diseal a highly paid famous celebrity played dnd? I'm sure you chop off your tiny left nut to live a day like Vin lives (considering you come online to make fun of gammers in your spare time, thats sad) so step off and go pester small children, they may yet be less brilliant then you.

- You shouldn't make fun of something you don't understand, you just look like the bigger idiot, but i guess you should be used to that

I'm a Dungeons & Dragons player, as well as a Dungeon Master. I have Dungeon Mastered in several campaign settings, as well as created my own setting. Played GURPS, RIFTS, Darkworld, D6 system (basic, yet fun), D10 system (also basic, even more fun), and several others. But I always return to Dungeons & Dragons, because it is my preferred game system.

Did I like this movie? Yes, yes I did. It remains one of my favorite movies. Don't get me wrong, though, it's one of my favorites for reasons I can't really describe, you wouldn't understand, and I'd rather not disclose anyway.

It's definitely not a movie of epic proportions, or even Final Fantasy 1 (NES) proportions, but it's definitely a good movie, all the same.

They actually did go for a good script, and did expect a box office smash hit, expecting to make a sequel and a third for a trilogy, however. They guessed the public's reaction wrong, and the sequel never came to be. I definitely like this movie.

As for being Epic... I don't care so much for "Epic" movies... A movie like this suits me fine, no inhibitions.

Actually, I am a "chick" as you refer to it, you pompous ignoramous. As for how guys find that, they find it pretty interesting. Which isn't to say other girls don't find that interesting to. It all depends on whether you hang out with the brainless crowd, or not. But then, brainless people never realize how brainless they are... So I'm not gonna bother trying to explain to you how brainless you truly are. Suffice to say, a zombie from Land of the Dead is smarter than you are.

And I'm going to role-play my first GURPS campaign.

Not a big fan of GURPS... What kind of setting in GURPS? Is it gonna be future, moderm, medieval, primeival?

My group and I have recently decided to go back in history to the golden age of Dungeons & Dragons... We're going to use Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition. This makes out to be great fun.

Hey everyone,

Regarding anonymousguy, ignore the cretin and don't argue with it. It may go away, it may not.

Hey there are some of us chicks who like d+d...and no I'm not one of the 200 pound, flannel wearing, can bench press a Range Rover girls who lives in their parents basement. I find it to be intellectually stimulating as well as an art form. Yes, to the common "babe" one might not discuss d+d...but then again one might not discuss anything at all because the average Sally McWhore is incapable of a coherent thought process outside of Britney Spears and anorexia. Furthermore, I have found that those males who play d+d get along best with those women who do not express characteristics of the latter description.

There was a sequel

It may have gone straight to DVD.

As to whether or not it's any good...

I have yet to see either.

I consider myself a well advanced DnD player ( about 10 years) and played in different several different setting's(ravenloft, council of wurms, dark sun.et cetra). With all the thing's they could have done with the "dungeons and dragons" movie they decided to let the majority of us down. The dnd world is almost never ending with idea's to come up with. My character quest's have been more intresting and would have made for a better movie. And for the time frame the "dnd" movie was placed in there were no such thing as thieve's who acted and spoke like "gangster's". They could have made this movie much more intresting and enjoyable for us role player's. Honestly I'm surprised they actually made a Dnd movie considering how long it's actually been out(86), if any of you's are old enough to remember the first dungeons and dragon's roleplaying book (the one with Satan on the cover). But my point being, they should have tried do a better job than just half assed it.

reply

This movie has absolutely nothing to do with D&D, though.

I do, and this "movie", is not acknowledged to exist by every gamer in London Ontario, Canada.

I have played many editions of DnD (1st ADnD is the most balanced in my opinion) and I finally got around to watching this movie. From what I was told, this movie is crap, just a one time watch. But after seeing it, I really did enjoy the movie. I knew it wasn't going to be any comparison to LOTRs quality wise, I was just looking for an entertaining fantasy movie that had the elements of DnD and this movie did.
When I first found out that there was a DnD movie, I knew that no movie they made could live up to its title, just like when the Final Fantasy movie was made. Both movies were very entertaining but no one movie could ever live up to such big titles as "Dungeons and Dragons" or "Final Fantasy". If you are into DnD, you should recognize a few of the spells, races, and creatures that are in the movie.
Basically, just watch this movie to enjoy it. Its not the best movie, but it does essentially capture the fantasy of a DnD campaign.

The movie is CRAP, the worst movie of all fictional worlds ever. Based on D&D history of Forgotten Realms they could have made a great movie much better than even the LoTR. But you see wizards gave the rights to the wrong company so they made crap movie.

My sister just got into D&D a couple months ago. She plays once a week, following the rules. She's really into it, too. Would this movie be a good gift for her for Christmas? I'm thinking the opinion of the movie varies with who plays the game and who doesn't.

To answer the first Poster;
I play DnD, And this movie sucked... Royally.
Anyone who thinks this movie depicts any accuracy into the lore behind the game-setting is very wrong.

Welcome to my Ignore list, now go stick your head in a pig.

reply

If you want a movie which is realy not all that bad, and is MUCH closer to real D&D, check out Dungeons & Dragons : Wrath of the Elemental Lords (I think... it might also be Wrath of the Dragon God)

reply

I have been a D&D player for years, altough they cant make a balanced version so I just use my own mix of 3 and 3.5. And this movie is just plain awful. What I dont get is the guy who made it spent a decade looking for sorce material and this is what we get? Why didn't he base it off a book lets say something by Salvatore, Greenwood, Wies, or Cunningham. Why did they have to make it so bad. Cause now when Salvatore the others are trying to get thier book turned into films, the moment a studio hear its related to D&D they back off worried that it'll turn out like this load.

movie...utter crap...cannot take this horse crap....

I play D&D, have for years, love it. DM/GM all the time, tho my gaming group has fallen outta touch for now with jobs and all. I really dont understand how the producers could have signed off on this story when Salvatore has laid the groundwork for what could be a great D&D movie. I am going to assume that the Salvatore books would be costly if turned into movies and that discouraged the use of them. I mean really, how about the Dark Elf Trilogy made into a movie? Even the icewind dale trilogy would stomp this pathetic story. And those arent great books, decent....

Thats only a partial aid really, the acting sucked, story only sucked a lil less. i have been in groups that could have pulled off these characters better, and they are simple little D&D roleplayers.

1/10, my feelings are hurted =)

On a side note, since greyhawk sucks for a movie, and eberron blows outright, and loft isnt owned by WoTC...FR is it, who would you see playing Drizzt Do'Urden?

reply

No one. I don't want to see a Drizzt movie. It would just ruin the novels that ive enjoyed over the years. Besides there's not gonna be another LOTR type movie for years to come and if and when they make the next big franchise it will more than likely be Dragonlance. When Salvatore kills off the character and the books have a chance to age for about 10-15 years or more then maybe i would like to see a drizzt novel come to life onscreen. Until then please don't make a Drizzt movie.

In regards to the first post:-

I'm a Dnd player and I've been playing it for about a year. I've been DMing a campain with my brothers for a few months. I have to say that I was not a big fan of the film. My campain storline is ten times better although that isn't really saying much. It was yet another half baked fantasy film, it was certainly nothing like DnD. The Beholders were crap, as were all the graphics, and lets face it, does any one even know what was the point of the dwarf?

Now heres how it should have been done:-http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/gamespyarchive/gspynod132.html
