Thank you, CTW, for removing the 3-2-1 Contact Intro from YouTube

I would like to thank the copyright holders of 3-2-1 Contact for demanding the removal of the show's delightful opening sequence from YouTube. I was able to see it a few weeks ago and it brought back so many memories for me.

Just think, with NO DISTRIBUTION for this show anywhere in the USA, if I had tried to find it now I wouldn't be able to reminisce and say, "Wow! I remember that TV show from when I was just a kid! I loved it!"

You CTW people are morons. The correct way to do it is to wait until you have secured your own DVD distribution deal for your show and THEN pull the copyright holder's card! That way people like me can say to themselves, "Huh. I can't find that cool looking 3-2-1 Contact intro online anymore.... I wonder if that means it's been released on DVD? Maybe I'll buy a volume..."

Perhaps you folks could also have some guts and put out experimental children's educational programming like this again while you're at it?

reply

Amen!

Don't these companies realise we are keeping the spirit of these unique programmes alive! It is an insult to everyone who made the show and watched the show to have something as trivial as an opening title removed.

reply

As far as the folks who made the show, I think they'd be happy to have loyal fans of their hard work and they'd also like to see the show released on DVD because they also very likely have some financial interest in it. There's money out there for these things to happen. This is the DVD era and the video format has saved a LOT of films and television shows from the wastebin.

I'd love to see CTW do the right thing and do a release of the show on DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

As for YouTube, they have to abide by their terms and federal laws just like everyone else. It just burns me up that so many rare logos, TV ident sequences (that last less than two seconds in some cases) that many children of the 1980's grew up with are being REMOVED from a service that has the power to disseminate a monstrous amount of home video and television and film from as far back as the 1910's!

Of course there will be copyright issues with all of those works in the same place! So far, however, it's been the best resource of its kind that I've found in my fourteen years on the internet TO SIMPLY VIEW OLD WORKS OF FILM TELEVISION AND VIDEO for my own education of pop culture as an artist. (Yes, I work in film). Try going into a local Blockbuster and "searching" for a trove of 1970's Renault car commercials. These folks could cut us a little slack.

Referencing music or other films in a film is enough of a nightmare to begin with. Now we have this!

reply

There are things on youtube which definately violate copyright rules, but they don't pull them. I think it's because youtube will only remove a copyrighted video because the copyright holders ask them to. So blame CTW, not youtube for pulling the opening credits.

reply

To show you how spot on you are - I was a Senior Producer, writer, and director of the series. About a year ago I asked to borrow a few segments of my own work for a demo reel I was building. The answer from Legal was an unqualified "NO". Go figure.

reply

So you couldn't even get permission to use your own work. Figures. How crazy is that?

Anyway, thank you for a job well done, ozziea. You were part of a much-loved era of children's programming. They don't make 'em like they used to...

Thanks, everyone, for these posts! They bring back a lot of memories.

reply

Ozzie, I'm seeing this reply a year later but that must have been upsetting to be stonewalled by the very company you made the show for when making a very simple request for tapes-- not to sell but for your demo reel!

I hope things have changed in the last year. Please allow me to offer my own thanks for making such a great and stimulating show. They really don't make fun, semi-documentary style science shows like this anymore.

reply

Frankly if they are going to pull stuff off the web, then CTW might as well put the shows back on Noggin or DVD. Otherwise leave people alone who want to remember the show and have no outlet for it.

i doubt that 321 contact would hold up very good t hi def transfers unless the orginal 16 mm film still exists of the show . you would need the orginal 16mm master to make a high def version of the show .

But be thankful there is GREAT demand for this show .. pbs is listing . from letters phone calles and emails .. in response they have released old school sesame street vol one . and the best of the electric company . And i promiss they are doing the same now for 321 contact . these retro discs are very poular and are making pbs lots of money . The demand for archiving the past is greater than ever now that they see what major sites majority of materials are .

But yes it was a bad move to remove it from you tube but a lot is back up now and they havn't taken it down yet ..

Hello!
The bulk of this show was shot on one inch video tape. Film was used in the opening sequence, but all studio work was on tape.

yeah, im sure the makers of 321 are very interested in making you say "wow, i member that"
they did their jobs, put alot of hard work and money into it and youtube was cashing in on that with no compensation to the owners of the copyright. It would be like someone coming into your house and saying "hey your not using that (whatever thing) anymore?" Yoink. "Cya Im gonna go sell it and make money for me!"

if you really loved the show you would be happy youtube isnt cheating the makers anymore.

What ever happend to public domain? I thought we had laws here in the USA that after a copyright has been in effect for so long that it gets passed into public domain... Why does a studio feel it must make every last dime and penny off a program after they have recouped their cost and also made a very nice profit. Where does this greed end? It's sick if you ask me... I can understand if TV plays it then of course the studio should make their share of the movie because the TV is getting commercial money from the program being aired. The studio could also save all the lawyers fees and stop manufacturing the medium it is being distributed on. I am not saying that the studio shouldn't make as much money as they can from each movie (some make tons of money and some actually lose money), just they shouldn't try to bite the hands that have fed them. YouTube isn't the evil ones here and they aren't making millions of dollars off this one clip either (rofl)... YouTube is like a video forums, you can't police every forum on the net and YouTube can only be held partially responsible for its users actions, but again this is something that should either be out on DVD making its money or be in public domain for a new generation to discover...

Because of lobbying by Disney and other corporations, nothing that came after Steamboat Willie has or ever will fall into the public domain.

reply

What does Disney have to do with 321 Contact?

Say what you want about my nostalgia for old shows I grew up with but you don't seem to get it. CTW isn't showing this series as a rerun on TV and they aren't selling it on DVD or On-Demand or any legitimate online channels. Therefore, the only way to see any of 3-2-1 Contact is/was on youtube or anywhere else some kind soul wants to make an old videotape recording available.

CTW isn't making any money off the show right now. It's sitting on a shelf collecting dust. If you read farther back in this thread you'll even see a gentleman who claimed to be the show's producer, writer and chief director tell us that he asked CTW (being the DIRECTOR of the show) that he wanted to use some clips for his demo reel. They flatly said "no" to him. Demo reels are commonly used in the entertainment industry by literally everyone and are only meant to briefly show your previous best work in about five minutes. They knew what he was asking for and they knew it wasn't a big deal for him to ask for it and they didn't care. He has more clout in this case than any of us since he actually worked on the show.

Also, a television show that was seen in a few million households across the USA is very different than my owning some singular object. Many, many people remember this show and as such it has become an aspect of our popular culture despite it being a commercial property. Someone coming into my house and saying, "Hey, you haven't played that guitar in years-- I'm going to take it," IS NOT the same thing because that specific guitar is not an object that a few million people widely recognize and identify with.

So no, I don't agree with you in the least. I do love the show, old as it is, and seeing as how CTW doesn't care in the least to release it on DVD or any other distribution channel I'm quite happy that posting a few clips of it on YouTube gets their attention one way or another.

reply

I think that you're overestimating the want for this show, and being naive in the belief that it will ever be on DVD.

reply

They are blowing a big opportunity, don't they realize how much money they could make by releasing the DVDs? Perhaps they don't have the originals, however many people have recorded episodes, they could try to go about looking for them. Also, according to 321 Contact Wikipedia article it says "Broadcasters wanted the children to record the episodes without being afraid of infringement of copyright violation".

Go back and check out 3-2-1 Contact on YouTube again. It's there!

BONUS: look for "3-2-1 Contact -- Very First episode - 1980 Intro/Theme" where they show them in the recording studio laying down the tracks for the theme song. It's abolutely AWESOME. If you've ever wondered what it's like to record something this is it. Yeah it's a digital world (mostly) now but the studio/recording process hasn't changed much.

Check it out, and be sure to view the "related videos" on the right. A must see for those that need a "Bloodhound Gang" fix!

"HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!"

Yep, the theme song is back on YouTube. The above poster is right. I just watched it.

Wow, the memories!!! The '80s RULED! There will never be a better time for children's programming than the late '70s-80s.
