was this supposed to be funny?

i really like this film but a lot of the complaints seem to be "it didn't know if it was a comedy or a horror and ended up being neither." was it really ever trying to be a comedy? i cant think of any funny moments, however i have been watching a lot of the league of gentlemen, garth marenghi's darkplace, and im alan partridge recently so maybe im just a bit overloaded on comedy and can't gauge something as funny unless its as hilarious as those shows.

I think the humor was supposed to come from Max Schreck and that's all. But his humor wasn't treated as intentional comedy, instead it was funny but still kept the drama undertone present. I mean, whenever Schreck said something remotely funny, we would get an instant reaction from someone who was being dramatic (Malkovich after the line -I'll eat her later'). So that kept the film as a drama first, dark, dark comedy second.

That probably made absolutely no sense...

I found Dafoe's vampire slightly comical, whereas the original is pure nightmare. It may be partly that it was filmed in b&w (although I dream in color) and the movements were jerky, and of course no spoken dialogue.

There was a lot of intentional comedy from various characters. Such as 'Max, the German theatre really needs you.'

Its that man again!!

"I don't think we need the writer."

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

'The script girl... I'll eat her later.'

I don't think the humour in this film was unintentional, but it appears a lot of people don't like their horror mixed too much with comedic satire. Fair enough; the film was not a spectacular success at the box office. As vampire films go, however, this is the one Nicholas Cage will keep on his resume, as opposed to his previous adventure in the genre, 'Vampire's Kiss'.

I think it is ok to add pieces of humor to a film like this. I found that the most comical bit was that some film crew members never realise that Shrek is really a vampire. The part of the film when two of the crew share their schnapps with Shrek is good. It loosens Shrek's mouth and he relates to them the problems of being a vampire. But the crew members think that Shrek is still in character off-set so to speak. After Shrek stumbles off into that creepy building one of them says "What an actor. Such dedication." That is great humor to get you through the darkness of the film's subject without worrying too much which genre it is intended to be.

...Certainly over-the-top. Just like the wild, exaggerated movements of silent film heroes and villains, the movie is definitely...played up for the back row, so to speak. For me, the laugh-out-loud moment was where the cinematographer shoots "Schreck", who simply states "Idiot."

As Satire with a twist, I found it hilarious!
