I am in agreement. Dafoe is one of the great chameleons of our time. Compare this film, Mississippi Burning, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and you'll still only get a small taste of this man's impressive range.

reply

Very, very true!! And let's not forget his portrayal of Bobby Perù in Lynch's "Wild at Heart" and the gay detective in "The Boondock Saints", also two of my all time favourite performances by this great artist!

reply

His performance wasn't that good. Everything good about it, was ripped of from Kinski's performance in Nosferatu, and Dafoe wasn't as good as Kinski.

reply

I personally believe that Willem can do no wrong. But I totally think that he was brilliant in this and should have totally won. I mean, he transformed and became the part.

reply

I agree, he was fantastic in it.

reply

I agree; he was actually the only thing I really liked about this movie.

I agree. Dafoe was great as always and he didn't rip off anybody. He was given the original movie and developed his performance from the original Max Shreck with Dafoe's own crzy added to it. Klaus Kinski (whom I also love) did the same thing. Both actors based their performances on the original. It isn't a rip off, but a tribute.

Actually Dafoe's character is supposed to be Max Schrek as a vampire, so he had to be as close the the original film performance because he wasn't playing Nosferatu, he was playing the actor that played him. It's not Dafoe's fault the Kinski is naturally as weird as Nosferatu. Lol

The fan base for gimmicky performances chiefly relying on physical ticks/transformation and make-up, is alive and well and not showing any signs of decreasing, I see.

Although not bad, it´s probably the ´least´ impressive performance by Dafoe that I´ve seen.

I always thought the same thing!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

Dafoe played this character with amazing success. By amazing success, I mean his performance was nothing short of extraordinary. I just couldn't see Dafoe at all. He comepletly reinvented himself so his voice, accent, look, expressions and mannerisms didn't resemble anything I've ever seen. I can't explain how mauch praise and awe I have for this piece of acting.

Dafoe - the performance of a life time.

P.S - I haven't seen Traffic yet (which Benicio Del Toro won Supporting actor for), but from what think, Dafoe deserved the Oscar 100%. But I can't really judge until I've seen Traffic and view Benicio's performance, which won instead of Dafoe's...

It was tough completion that year. For me Joaquin Phoenix should have won that year.

reply

Phoenix was good but his performance at times was more comical than any thing else. But I was very impressed with most of his performance. He was one of the best things about Gladiator.

But like you said, it was a hard year.
