Who was the vampire?

As much as I like this film, does anyone else we'd learned more about the vampire's history and background? Murnau says he first discovered him in a book of portraits of ancient kings rumored to be vampires, but even he doesn't truly know who he is. I find this a little strange; if the vampire's portrait is in the book, wouldn't that make him one of those kings, and therefore include his name? And how does the woman who made him a vampire fit into it?

reply

That's sort of the point and the tragedy. Orlock is so old that he can't remember and the records from his time periods have been lost. So it is impossible to learn more.

In France, it was the Merovingian Bloodline.

Merovingian Goddess
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

Something must have been known of his background though, as his portrait was in a book. Wouldn't his name have been included?

reply

I like not knowing. Makes it more mysterious and creepy.

reply

His name would be in the book though....so why doesn't Murnau know it?

reply

Just because his picture was in the book doesnt mean that his name was too. Maybe the book was a very loose collection of random information about vampires that the author had collected and all he had on Max was a rough sketch and whereabouts?

Good question. Since Vampires retain their mental faculties, do they ever succumb to human ailmenst like alzheimers or parkisons? While drinking on the boat set, he was asked some questions, like if he was lonely, why didnt he make more vampires, and he could only reply that he didnt know if he has or ever did have the ability to create others like himself

And how did he survive with so few peasants seemingly around. He must have been on one hell of a starvation diet.

This might be the all-time dumbest thread I've ever encountered on IMDB.

Apparently, the woman Shreck briefly mentions who made him a vampire so long ago is the same woman Murnau meets in the sex club near the beginning, and who gave him the idea to make a vampire film in the first place, according to the script.
