6.5 out of 10 ? Why?

I love this movie. I still wonder why such a low rating? Maybe those ultra-religious people around here ?

I can not think of a major flaw in this movie. Oh well

Probably because there are few people like you and me, plentyofkb, as well as everyone else in this forum. The majority of movie-goers cant sit through a film with only three lead actors (no matter how spectacular of performances) or that has one main setting. Majority of people just cant see the absolute ingeniousity (if that even is a word) and beauty in a character-driven film. That's why I believe it recieved the low rating.

hello there,
That is exactly the beauty of this film! Only three lead actors and at the end I don't wnat the movie to end!!! The dialogues are a piece of art!

seriously- why a 6.5? i mean star wars episode 3 is in the top 250, and this excelent film hasn't gotten degraded by people who either didn't understand it- or got bored by the fact that it was a simple film. i saw this movie when it came out and i loved it. kevin spacey is brilliant!! movie- 9/10!!!!!

I'm not an action junkie and I like intellectual films, but I found this one boring. The "philosophical exchanges" were simply basic, the movie didn't provoke any interesting thouughts in me. And if an intellectual movie doesn't do that, I don't think it's worth seeing.

i feel 7.5 is a fair rating (the film does not end very well... after the last convo i mean).

people don't rate this film higher cause of a few reasons...

A) it is a film which has no bombs or car chases.
B) it may tick some religious people off (though the film it self is not about religion being bad but trying to force it on others... which is one of the many themes)
C) it never got the press it needed. it was a film which was expected to fail in the box-office even though it was very good.

this happens alot with movies like this...

more and more we see films nominated for awards which we have not heard alot about (because these are films movie producers feel the population is too stupid to appreciate or maybe that we can't sit still for 90 minutes without a bomb explosion. Sadly they are right... alot of people won't like these types of movies.)

"Big Kahuna" is, literally, one of the most underrated films I've ever seen. It surpasses "Glengarry Glen Ross", and that's pretty hard to do.

reply

Could have something to do w/ the film being so realistic. And the fact that life can and will be very depressing! Sad, but true.

It was trying to watch, but to see the two pros go at it for hr and a half was wonderful.

I, too, thought of Glengarry Glen Ross while watching this. They're both great. It would be very hard to choose which is better. There were parts in GGR that I liked a bit better than this. But there were also parts I didn't like as much. Overall, I liked (as in would like to be with) the characters in BK better.

it didn't have enough explosions. seriously, they were talking the whole time and i just new one of them was about to be blowed up. then nothing. 2/10

lmfao honestly, one of my favorites. 8/10

i loved how it was intimate and everything took place in their minds. most viewers always want scene changes and action. if they don't get the scene changes, they claim, "nothing happened." yawn. i have to give great credit to the writer and director. they knew that the only significant aspect was the diologue. the fine acting made it even richer. i think, many thought it could have been a book or radio program. however, their diction and facial expressions were needed to show the human element highlighting their very personal conversations.

i think more movies could be like this. slap about 3 great actors in a room. then, have them discuss an interesting topic. wam bam, hail to the screenwriter!!! i liked the fact that little was going on. it was realistic. they had time to think and open up to eachother, and as viewers we weren't distracted.

movies where people are running about and throw out great one liners or something philosophical is rubbish.

I go for option C and B.

I also love this movie, but I think is 9 is too high for this movie. A movie who diserve a 9 must be very good. THis movie was good good, but I must have some 'action'. For example this movie plays only in this Hotel. It would be more interesting when the were more film locations.

I gave it a 7/10

By the way, it's a 6.4 now.

Yeah, I don't know. 9 out of 10 in my book. I also wish people would give religious people a rest on the subject. I'm religious, and I loved it. It's not so awful to Christians as it seems on the surface. Or maybe the author intended to be offensive, but it sure doesn't offend me; besides, it's a brilliant piece of work, no matter how many people it offends.

I gotta agree on this film being too low! There was really only one location, but who gives a flying fu*k? This movie had a great compelling story that really made it interesting with or without action! The script was absolutely fantastic and it was executed by great actors to perfection! Seriously I couldn't stop listening to Kevin Spacey, the man is just amazing and he shines in this role and Danny Devito ain't no slouch either, he gives what might be one of his best performances! Sometimes people forget that movies are about story telling! This story is basic, but only if you don't find the underlying truths in it! A story doesn't need a tone of action to be compelling! A 7.5 from me!

Well I'm a victim of circumstance!

I'm not sure myself. I think part of the problem is we're accustomed to explosions, fights etc and films like this go against the grain. That being said I love this film to bits.

Pretty much like everyone else I only found it after it was on TV late one night and I was hooked. The draw to stay and watch was Spacey but every actor brought something unique to the part. The fact it was 3 guys, one room for most of it and this really engrossing story really works so well.

I find it a shame that films of this ilk get less respect when they deserve it. Spacey was on form as usual, I loved his expressions, that kind of humbleness he brought to the role and Devito was probably at his best in this.

Prior to seeing it I hadn't seen him in much and he blew me away in this.

Certainly among my favourite films, I absolutely adore The Big Kahuna and wish it got the praise deserved. Couldn't care about explosions et al, just give me three guys in one room and let the story flow :-)
