Silent Footsteps

Does anybody know why in the original Japanese version Godzilla's footsteps make little, if any noise? It seems like a completely bizarre stylistic quirk, with everything he does accompanied by sound effects, and yet his stomping is silent... This occurs both in the old DVD and the recent Blu-ray. Anybody?
