Whenever there was a scene of the "UFO" flying over the city I had to cringe.

The ultimate failure. That's what it is.
I could tell it was fake but that didn't bother me at all. I'm the type of person who isn't really bothered by poor special effects. I am able to look past them and see them for what they are supposed to be rather than what they are. Poor special effects have never ruined a movie for me.

You don't get toho Godzilla do you? They are made on shoe string budgets. They are by design made to be B movies due to said budget.
Just enjoy it for what it is.
Actually, the majority are big budgeted by the standards of the Japanese film industry. They just weren't given the time and budget, or had the expertise, to do better. Two films later, the CGI had improved.
