Worst Play-by-Play EVER!!

Bob Cole has had a swell career but he is so washed up it isn't even funny. HNIC is nearly unwatchable while he and Harry Neale are still in the booth. I'd rather mute my TV and watch in silence. He has no clue what's going on on the ice or who any of the players are, he misses every penalty, and his voice has become irritating. It's like watching hockey with a senile old man. Sad really. All he can do at this point is try to fall back on his folksy charm, like "Woah, baby! They're really trying hard now!" Terrible.

"You're the first one I've ever heard that has made a bad comment about Bob Cole"

Even his defenders usually acknowledge his flaws. To be completely unaware that there are many people who find him terrible (and have for years) tells me you're out of touch. Even some sports media (who normally defend their own colleagues to the last) have admitted he's through, like The Toronto Star's media columnist Chris Zelkovich.

"I've never heard him miss an important play"

I hear him miss plays every game. Such as last night when he and Harry Neale were trying to award Montreal with both a goal and a powerplay at one point, when neither was the case. He also announced excitedly, "Theodore shoots!" when Theodore (goalie) was facing a shot. And I only caught one period! I don't know what you mean by "important".

"Most of the other NHL programs, and nearly all the American ones have very annoying commentary"

I'd rather listen to TSN's Gord Miller any day. Or even CBC's own Jim Hughson. And WHY did CBC retain Cole but fire the far superior Chris Cuthbert last year!? As for the American announcers, they're hit and miss. But at least American broadcasts (Fox, ESPN; I haven't seen OLN) have much better presentations. CBC still sometimes looks like a community cable production.

Cole and Neale are a horrible duo who need to be put on mothballs. Cole doesn't even recognize any of the players unless they are wearing a Maple Leafs jersey. Their bias towards the Leafs is obvious even to a blind person.

Just say NO to censorship!

reply

The only problem with Bob Cole is that he is the biggest Maple Leaf homer I've ever seen. It is quite disgusting watching Leafs games with him doing the Play by Play. It's unfortunate that CBC ditched Chris Cuthbert, as he was the best, although Jim Hughson isn't bad either.

If I were to rank the announcers:

Chris Cuthbert
Jim Hughson (he's good, but Greg Millen just pisses me off)
Bob Cole
Don Whittman
Gord Miller (by far the worst, and most annoying with Pierre McGuire)

reply

I agree with all of that but I might rank Hughson higher than Cuthbert

reply

Sweiland and Canucksfan share in the popular belief that Bob Cole is a Leafs fan and that this is his big problem. I can tell you he's not, and that this misconception is due to his general suckiness. Allow me to explain:

About 80 per cent of the games Cole calls are Leafs games (which is CBC's fault, not Coles; Leafs are the #1 commodity, he's the #1 play-by-play man for some reason). He lives in a Maple Leaf bubble and makes little attempt to familiarize himself with the opposing teams. That's not bias, that's poor preparation. He sometimes referred to Team Canada during the Olympics and World Cup as "the Leafs". That's not bias, that's senility!

What gives the misconception such widespread acceptance is that non-Torontonians are so over-sensitive to Toronto-centrism that they hear Cole misidentify a Canucks player, or bungle a call, or praise Tie Domi's work ethic, and they think it's because he's a homer. (It's a form of conspiracism that has reached hallucinatory levels in Ottawa in particular.) Trust me. He's just a lousy announcer.

reply

If that problem is just that he's lousy, then why doesn't CBC fire him?

Just say NO to censorship!

reply

Good question! But why does CBC do anything? Why did they fire Chris Cuthbert and Glenn Healy? Why did they try to dump Ron MacLean a few years ago? Why did they put Don Cherry on a 7-second delay? Of course "firing" a Hall of Fame broadcaster like Bob Cole would be a public relations nightmare, but they could have politely nudged him into a dignified retirement during the lockout year.

reply

I understand everything that you say, and I know it is quite evident that Bob Cole doesn't ACTUALLY show bias, but we on the west coast, who either love the leafs or hate the leafs, need something to complain about. Another thing that makes me angry is that the Leafs are ALWAYS on TV, while CBC NEVER shows Montreal or Ottawa, even if the two teams are playing each other (with the exception of Hockey Day In Canada).
Even though he his a "hall of fame broadcaster", if he were to be considered "top notch", then he would make somewhat of an effort to familiarize himself with other players. I can't stand the:

"He passes it behind the net to the defenceman, Domi in on the forecheck, and doing a good job of it too. Mats Naslund comes into take the puck from his teammate. Now up to the Sundin twins. OH, SUNDIN STEALS....IN...SCORING!!!"

I mean come on....isn't Mats Naslund dead?....

That is some hilarious play-by-play. And sadly a very accurate immitation.

I can't stand one of those FSN guys who I always hear with the Pittsburgh games. he honestly must be an escaped mental patient.

"How much fried chicken can you eat!?!" What the hell is that? it's not even clver or insightful, it's just retarded

That's Mike Lange. Believe me, he has stranger lines.

gord miller is okay, but is it just me or is pierre mcguire the most annoying person on earth, he just seams like he is always rambling on trying to sound smarter then everyone? or yelling like his hair is on fire...if he had any...

Hockey in-game commentary needs to be completely overhauled. I haven't caught the NBC broadcast yet, but I've been told that their approach is more conversational and goes against the traditional "play-by-play" description that TV broadcasters have inherited from the days of radio. THAT'S the future.

If you ever watch English soccer games, the broadcasters over there know how to do it right. Do you really need some jerk informing you every step of the way about every pass, every shot, every action? Are we children? Are we so distrustful of our senses that we must be constantly reassured that we are not hallucinating? I mean, come on. In the future, broadcasters will give us the option to watch the game with the commentary on or off. I personally would choose to watch a game with it switched OFF, and just the sound of the crowd and the game. I am so sick of Bob Coles voice I think I'm gonna shoot myself.

I'll take Cole over that jack ass Pierre McGuire anyday!

"When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons, and make Super-Lemons."

reply

Cole gives me the impression that he is like a guy sitting in front of his tv watching the game and talking to himself. Give it up Bob , 50 years is enough.

reply

Pierre MacGuire is probably the best color guy in the NHL. He's funny, intelligent, and always knows what he's talking about. If you guys think Bob Cole is bad, you should try listening to Ron Tugnutt on Senators broadcasts. That guy makes me sick to my pants.

"It's great to be in the NHL right now, we got a lot o' key games goin' on at key times."

"The reason why they're lettin' so many in, is cuz they can't seem to keep em' out."

And yes, Cole and Neale remind me of Pinky and The Brain. Or Dinky and the Brain is their case.

Bob Cole is eerily reminescent of Stompin' Tom Connors. That voice haunts me in my dreams.

By the way, are there any other NHL boards on the IMDB, or have we found the only one?

reply

Bob Cole and Harry Neale are terrible commentators. Maybe back in their first few years they were okay, but they're embarassing now. Jim Hughson is by far the premiere play-by-play of this generation. I'm glad he's got a contract with CBC now as well as Sportsnet, but he really needs a new partner that isn't Greg Millen. Are there any good color guys in the league? I'm sick of all these washed up goaltenders still acting like they're superstars when they never were to begin with (see Greg Millen, Glenn Healy, Ron Tugnutt).

reply

If you watch TSN, Pierre Macguire is a BRILLIANT color commentator, probably the only one I like. Now, if only Kelly Hrudey did color, then we'd have an awesome show going. But then no, we'd have to listen to Don Cherry even more, and then I would have to kill myself. Someone should sign Ray Ferraro to do something, he was on The NHL Network, but I think they let him go. Andy Murray did a decent job on the Flames broadcasts as well.

Did anyone else catch Dwayne Roloson on ESPN last year? He's a brilliant goaltender, but it must have been embarrasing for him and his broadcast partner. He has a terrible studder, which few people in Canada know about.

"Don't talk to me while I'm interrupting."

reply

GO OILERS GO!!!!!!!!!!

reply

That's funny you would say that about Pierre Maguire, because everyone I know absolutely despises that guy. He's got the furthest thing from a radio/television-friendly voice, he's often quite biased depending on his "mood," I guess, and he has this deluded sense of accomplishment and wisdom. As far as I'm concerned, he's the personification of fingernails down a chalkboard.

Andy Murray was pretty weak during his color as well, I don't know how many times I heard about Dustin Penner during that series, but he's quite California-skewed and it shows in his "analysis."

Never knew about Roloson's stutter though, seems to be completely absent when giving interviews. Probably because the adrenaline is through the roof by the time the media gets as hold of him.

About Hrudey, I think he'd be a terrific color guy, but I have a feeling CBC doesn't want to pull him away from Behind the Mask, as it's the off-Cherry equivalent to Coach's Corner. Plus, Kelly treats Ron like a regular human being, while Cherry just berates him.

reply

When Buffalo eliminated my choke-tacular Sens this year with that OT goal, Bob Cole sounded as though christmas had come early

"And pommegranate comes streaking in, he shoots HE SCOOOOOORES!!!!"

reply

"I'll take Cole over that jack ass Pierre McGuire anyday!"

I second that one!

reply

You forget that while most of us grew up watching the game, so we can follow it properly without the every little move play by play, there are those newer fans like in the expansion areas who required the glowing puck a few years back. The biggest complaint then was that they couldn't see the puck, so they made it glow. Of course those people need every little thing explained to them. Soon enough that will pass, if the teams can remain there long enough, then on to the British football commentary.

reply

After numerous complaints to the CBC about Bob and Harry, I'm at wits end with these 2 clowns! Recently my Mother, and I sat down to watch the Oilers play Anaheim in game 3 or 4 of this years playoffs. Now we had been most happy with the work of Jim Hughson to this point, but I guess that because the Sens got trashed out, that Bob and Harry had to come west and destroy a good thing.
My poor Mother was so frustrated with Bob's crappy attempt at play-by play, as her eyesight is failing and Bob could not keep up tp the play. He would go on wild tangents about how Darcy Tucker was a good candidate for the Liberal Leadership party, and Harry would still be telling you what every player was thinking at that very instance. At one point of the game, my wife thought that I was losing my marbles, so i told her to listen to this clown, and note the number of times that the puck was passed around before a players name was mentioned. She got up to 12 different players before dingbat Bob mentioned anyones name. Then it was the wrong player!! Could i blame my Mother for becoming frustrated trying to listen to this??
When is the CBC gonna wise up and leave these 2 clowns to broadcast only the Leafs games, and allow the rest of the country an opportunity to see and hear announcers who are up to speed with the game?

GOD BLESS THE OILERS!!!!

reply

Well i hope to god your caps lock key was broken for that message! Anyways yeah also take note of how many times they screw up the penalty calls. Whichever team Cole says received a penalty, you can bet that its the other team that actually received it.

reply

I live in the U.S. (Nashville, specifically), and during the early rounds of the playoffs, OLN would do a doubleheader, with the first game being of their own production, and the second a "Hockey Night in Canada" simulcast. I got so sick of Mark Lee during the Oilers-Wings series, but I loved it when they simulcast games Jim Hughson did.

OLN, though, did have their own problems, particularly Joe Beninati, the TV voice of the Washington Capitals. He screamed practically every damn play, and his screams would have a growl in his voice, too.

Pierre Maguire is working for NBC during the Stanley Cup Final. I think he's all right and gets good interviews.

But the guy I was happiest to see (or hear) on my TV set doing play-by-play this year was Chris Cuthbert. NBC hired this guy to do some of their regional games, and man, did he ever grow on me. He replaced Mike Emrick as my favorite NHL play-by-play guy. I loved his voice and his genuine enthusiasm for the game. I wanna be a sportcaster, and doing NHL play-by-play for NBC is one of my dream jobs, and I have Chris Cuthbert to thank for really reminding me why I love hockey.

reply

I'll go along with you on Cuthbert. He's quite good, and just another one of the good ones that CBC got rid of, in order to keep the 2 dolts (Bob and Harry!)

reply

But Neale does know what he's talking about. After all, he was a coach.

reply

hardly successful

Only fools are enslaved by time and space.

reply

Harry Neale was a terrible coach. He screwed up the Canucks and was terrible working with their prospects. His time here was a very dark time indeed.

Cole and Neale are hands down the worst, the absolute worst. And no, it has nothing to do with TO bias - it has everything to do with general incompetency.

But then I think Cherry's a joke too.

reply

Cuthbert isn't a moron, he knows his sports. He has called a lot of games for a lot of sports for a lot of years. I do agree that Cole and Neale have a lot of excitement in their voices, but that doesn't make up for the ever increasing amount of errors. Unfortunatly any replacement is gonna suck even more than they do. At least these guys have experience and a sense of the history of hockey, they were there during the glory years of the league. They obviously love the game and it doesn't come across like it is a job to them. I always get the feeling that they wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

reply

As a born and bred Canadian, I've gotta say that Bob and Harry are piss poor excuses for announcers! I don't need to hear every movement and players name, but when they do say something, why can't they say something inciteful, and intelligent? Bob is ALWAYS 8 moves behind the action, and Harry knows EVERYTHING and can tell you what the players, coaches and fans are thinking at any given moment!!

Long live Rod Phillips (voice of the Oilers radio broadcasts)

What did ya think of Cassie Campbell's stand in for Harry Neale?

What fun is it being cool if you can't wear a sombrero?

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I knew it was going to be about Bob Cole. As a Toronto Maple Leafs fan I have to listen to him pretty much every Saturday...this usually results in me nearly putting my fist through a wall. Every summer i wish for his retirement so that all HNIC viewers can listen to a commentator who calls the game according to what ACTUALLY happens...

reply

ahhh!! a man after my own heart. i too haven't been able to tolerate bob and harry for years. they are not only painful homers for the leafs but bob is always 12 passes behind the play, and he only mentions the names of the leaf players, he'll never mention the opposition players. harry thinks he's amusing, but alas he cannot reads minds, nor can he tell what a player is thinking at that very instance. (although he seems to think he can.)
bring on gord miller, and pierre mcguire.
