graveyard helper's pants

In the cemetery scene, when Carmiña's mother is being buried, one of the men lowering the coffin into the grave is wearing pants that are completely open in the back, and no undergarment. What's up with that? Is it a wardrobe malfunction or is there some historical/cultural reference?
