Actually, I think it was becuase it reminded him of Stella.

This was a terrible movie.
I'm curious about that scene, too. At first I thought he might be poisoning her with the other tea, but there was no indication of that as the movie went on.
That was a strange scene, that seemed disconnected from the rest of the film. Its relevance was never explained or even hinted at.
But for that matter, I didn't think the movie held together as a whole. Too many times events just didn't seem connected to each other.
