I'm a longtime Doug fan, but I've never seen this movie or the Disney cartoon. After seeing the review, I have to ask, "What were they thinking?" The reason Doug was so great was because it was realistic. The lives of Doug's characters match the lives its viewers. Remember all the sea monsters, robots, and lasers in Doug? Neither do I. Granted, there were a few cyberpunk elements in Doug (Mr. Dink's gadgets for the most part; I'm guessing that Roger's brain drain is non-canon, when Bluffington become Star Wars all of a sudden?

reply

Roger's brain drain was only in Doug's imagination during a Quailman fantasy.

You're right, Doug was, on Nickelodeon, set in a world just like ours, only with a slight twist (mostly with the semi-anthropomorphic animals, who had the intelligence and mindsets of humans, only they couldn't talk). They established those parameters from the very beginning, and it made sense in a cartoon world. Why bother to animate animals if they're not going to do some funny things? I also think it was cool how they treated them as such, as it was a sign of respect and a statement towards those who mistreat/belittle them and their needs. Animal lovers see their pets and other animals as having their own personalities and believe they should be entitled to some sensitivity.

Now, all of a sudden throwing in the monster crap on Disney violated the parameters of the show's alternate-United States setting, and it is yet another sign of how the folks at Jumbo/Disney destroyed the show.

The show went from going, "there's no such thing as a nematode" (at least, not the way Roger described it) to, "there's a monster living in a lake!"

That poor robot!

I had never seen this movie either, but was curious about it. I agree as well, turning Bluffington into Star Wars was just stupid.

reply

I saw it in the theater, it was crappy.

reply

oh my goodness, the robot scenes almost killed me.
