I'm sure this has been brought up but why call it the "first" movie? Were they planning on making more? Even back then I could have told Disney they weren't going to make any other films and that it would be a moderate success, if that.

No idea. The original title for it was going to be "The Very First Doug Movie Ever." This is what it is called on the preview of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride VHS.
shareI don't think they necessarily ever intended to make a second Doug movie, but it's more like a happy kid saying, "Hey! I'm in my first movie! I've starred in a TV show about myself for a while now, but this is my first actual movie! Wow!" It's definitely not as good as the series; nowhere near it. But it still isn't terrible. The Nick Doug is loads better than the Disney version, imo.
