Miss Lavender

I don't remember her being that devious and stingy...I was delighted with the way she was portrayed until near the end of the fourth episode, when she refused to shell out for someone to help Charlotte with the work of her (Miss Lavender's) wedding and twisted Marilla's words so that Anne had to help Charlotte while Marilla was stuck with the twins alone and Miss Lavender didn't have to lift a finger or pay a dollar.

What was up with that? Do I need to reread the books? It doesn't seem in character...

They totally made that crap up. I think they wanted Marilla to be in more scenes so they invented stuff, and did it badly.

I think whoever wrote this wanted to 'deepen' the characters - hence the more argumentative Gilbert, for starters - but it doesn't always work. I didn't mind that about Miss Lavender as much, though - the woman had lived as a recluse for years, on some level that is just eccentric, but on another it is a little selfish. She lost her fiance originally by being too demanding.
