Any Spaced fans seen Community?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1439629/

I became aware of Community when the nerd sites got in an uproar over its possible cancellation. I enjoyed it and recommended it to several colleagues as a sort of spiritual successor to Spaced with all the pop-culture references. FWIW they lapped it up.

Yes, if this was ten years ago I'd instead be begging for another season of Spaced

Anyone else catch Community?

I've just discovered Community and my immediate thought was that it was heavily influenced by Spaced. I actually came here for the same reason as you, to see if any other Spaced fans saw at as the spiritual successor, glad I wasn't the only one!

It is a brilliant show, and it's good that there are loads of episodes as opposed to the 14 we got with Spaced, and that it's still running. Really glad I've found another show like Spaced! The paintball episode from series 1 is one of the best episodes I've seen in any show, absolutely inspired stuf.

I think the only thing missing from Community is a character as good as Brian.

reply

Funny you mention the paintball episode from Spaced, because season 2 of Community ended with a double-episode special where Greendale has a huge paintball tournament. Coincidence?

reply

Simon pegg is a fan of community too!

If listen to podcasts try digging out 'the nerdist' podcast with simon pegg. joel mchale gate cashes the podcast and Pegg asks him for season 2 on DVD. Good interview too!

I hate community.... it is nothing like spaced. Everyone are so obnoxious uptight and awkward, and most of the characters are quite boring.

The way they talk to each other seem so UN-plausible and the situations that happen are just driven to stupid exaggerations. Like that one time Abed waited 26 hours for this test thingy and they played it out as that was a normal characteristic for him. When confronted he says something like "because you asked, and that's what friends do... heeh" then his silly smile her gaze and that Melancholic music. GAaaaaaaah it is so bad.

Doesn't help that each episode has a cheesy Moral and random pep talks, kinda like scrubs....

And Jeff Winger is like John Crichton from Farscape.... seem OK at first then becomes this self acclaimed hero who is actually really sleezy and cocky, but no one cares.

Spaced is just real life in a surreal world, you know?
Community does not even fit it's own boring world..... american college.... watch "freaks and geeks" or "todd vs the book of pure evil" instead ...

Well I've just watched 4 episodes tho. The last scene sketches are quite funny tho. If they did without Jeff and Britta it MIGHT have worked.

Ok, you like it, but don¨t mislead people to think it is like Spaced cos it is a whole different world....

Fair enough

The way they talk to each other seem so UN-plausible and the situations that happen are just driven to stupid exaggerations.

Yeah I liked that implausibility too, like the beginning of season 2 when they did the Matrix spoof, Karate Kid spoof & Daisy was in her own photo twice.

Like that one time Abed waited 26 hours for this test thingy and they played it out as that was a normal characteristic for him.

Like when Mike took too much speed from some Scottish guys at the pub and ended up 100s of miles away

When confronted he says something like "because you asked, and that's what friends do... heeh" then his silly smile her gaze and that Melancholic music. GAaaaaaaah it is so bad.

"Get off me you bummer"

"That just happened didn't it?"

And Jeff Winger is like John Crichton from Farscape.... seem OK at first then becomes this self acclaimed hero who is actually really sleezy and cocky, but no one cares.

True. He is a sleaze, they even spend an episode where his ego expands to lethal proportions

Spaced is just real life in a surreal world, you know?

Like the episode where a theatrical event turns into a zombie film or when a halloween party turns into a zombie film?

Community does not even fit it's own boring world..... american college.... watch "freaks and geeks" or "todd vs the book of pure evil" instead ...

Can't vouch for American college, and strangely I found Todd to be slightly preachy. Cultural differences perhaps. Thanks for the recommendation for "Freaks & Geeks" I'll try and chase it down.

Well I've just watched 4 episodes tho. The last scene sketches are quite funny tho. If they did without Jeff and Britta it MIGHT have worked.

Mmmm, Red Dwarf without Rimmer would have been nothing at all. Sometimes it's the flaws that make the characters more compelling, for me at least.

Ok, you like it, but don¨t mislead people to think it is like Spaced cos it is a whole different world....

I said it was sort of a spiritual successor, I feel it has themes in common. I much prefer Spaced it had much funnier individual quotes. However there are more episodes of Community still to come, the original Spaced actors are perhaps too old (and successful?) to ever revisit these roles. Which is why I am dreading the forthcoming New series of Red Dwarf...

I've been watching Community for a while but didn't know about Spaced until today, it definitely does seem like Community is a spiritual successor of sorts. I agree that there isn't a character as good as Brian though, I'm only 3 episodes in to Spaced and can already tell he's one of my favorite characters in any comedy series ever.

Good use of the English language.
obnoxious, uptight and awkward? sounds like: Mr. Bean, That Mitchell and Webb Look, Monty Python, The Black Adder, Frye and Laurie...

you probably love Big Bang Theory...

its ok , nothing special.

I love Community but it didn't occur to me how similar to Spaced it was until near the end of season 2. Honestly, I think I prefer Spaced, but the given the harsher environment a 22 episode a year seasons imposes in comparison to Spaced's 14 episodes over 3 years I can forgive them. I love the stop-motion episode and Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design.

What if a squirrel wants a sausage?

reply

yeah its the same sort of style just Spaced is a lot funnier. the gags are just better and there are more of them.

reply

I love Community. It's the best comedy currently airing in my opinion and as someone else mentioned Pegg himself is a fan of the show, even following some of the cast on twitter.

Spaced and Community are both terrific.

and a COKE.... I'm sorted

reply

I love Community. I was living over in Canada when it first started airing, so I was able to catch it straight away. I just wish Chevy Chase would quit being such a massive tosser on set and either do his job without complaining or leave already. He's likely ruining it for the rest of them.

yeah, but I feel if he left and the show continued, the dynamic/chemistry of the group would be thrown off.

incidentally there was an episode where exactly that happened lol

(I do like Pierce as a character though, but Chevy seems a bit tiresome to work with)

I love both Community and Spaced. I honestly didn't take the time to watch Spaced until recently, but I've watched Community since it made it's debut. I believe they are both very similar in how they approach pop culture, and they are not afraid to go over the top. If anyone says they are nothing alike, then they really need to watch both back to back. If anything, Community is a toned down a bit, but both seem to attract the cult audiences because they are basically self aware parodies. I think both deserve the praise they receive.

I just realized Shaft Juice sounds like semen.

I'm a big fan of Community. It was hard to take season 4. With out Dan Harmon it really went off the rails but it seems to be getting back in the swing of things now. It doesn't replace Spaced but it fills a niche for me. I think both shows are great, but Spaced is better.
