WORST SHOW IV EVER SEEN.......

im sure everybody here LOOOOOOOOVES it, but my boyfriend insists on watching the box set of this "show" every day and its starting to wreck my head!! is this stuff really supposed to be funny?

Perhaps the million references to movies are flying over my head and the whole saying the words and making a few funny voices rather than actually acting, oh and lets not forget the random fuzzy camera or swooshing about, have all gone over my head...but seriously, all i have to say of this show is...id rather watch paint dry

reply

Humour is subjective. Plenty of people adore this show but you don't, fair enough - just don't ever watch it again, that's fine.

To me, I would rather watch paint dry than view something like "Anchors aweigh" (picked something you like to illustrate my point). It's all subjective.

I don't really see the point in coming here and saying you hate it though, especially since the only people on these boards these days (10 years after the show finished) are more than likely going to be people who love it, like me :P

Making a new signature so that "PersonalCheeses" is happy. xoxo

Well I would say it deserves the right to be called a comedy and a bloody brilliant one at that, it's not to everyone's tastes but it appeals to a lot of people who get the pop culture and movie references.

Just because it isn't filled with pathetic catchphrases and a laughter track that tells the audience what they should be laughing at, doesn't mean it fails as a comedy. On the contrary, it contains both broad and subtle humour which a lot of people don't get, but those that do find it funny and very well made.

reply

I get the comedy...and the whole "witty" side to it, and the fact that alot of it the sacrasm and irony in it is supposed to be so funny and edge and blah blah but i still think its rubbish. Also the fact that Simon Pegg is in it doesnt help. Anyway he's pretty much selling out these days and doing "witty" shows like this anymore, instead he's making crappy comedys in the states like Paul and Run Fatboy Run, with stars from those lame catchphrase and laughing track filled shows u were referring to.

Shows like The Office (both UK and US versions)
30 Rock
Glee
Extras
Modern Family etc...are all entertaining, this is pretentious crap

reply

laughter tracks are annoying, i've watched the show lots of times and didn't even realise there was no laughter track, so glad there isn't to tell me when to laugh

"sir, sir, i gotta check and see if you've soiled yourself, I'll get to you in a moment, sir!"

reply

I don't really see the point in coming here and saying you hate it though,

That person has as much right to be here voicing their view as much as you do. You don't have any more right to be here than they do. And your comment above is nothing short of undiluted ignorance to a differing view. You have no right to question the presence of those on this board or any board to who's view you dislike. This website and every site that carries message boards on them are for all to give their view. Be it positive or negative.

And for the record this show is like watching paint dry. I bought the series one and two boxset and watched it once. I'll never watch it again. I honestly don't know why I liked the show to begin with when it first aired on UK TV all those years ago. It's not even remotely funny. Not one bit!. Which is kind of like everything Pegg and Wright do together!.

Frank: "You are such an a$$hole."
Milton: "Yes I am. I'm an a$$hole... with an Uzi!.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but just wanted to say I love Spaced and me and my other half are watching it right now.

Personally, I think it's obvious that the woman that started this thread was having serious relationship issues with her boyfriend and was wasting her energy hating on the show, rather than actually facing up to her boyfriend and confronting the issues. I hope she's sorted it out now and is getting on with her life and not blaming television shows for her relationship problems.

reply

nope, sorry to burst the bubble, 2 and a half years strong, still hate Spaced, fortunately finished watching it and now we watch and enjoy actual good shows that we love together like Modern Family, Mad Men and Breaking Bad :D But thanks for the analysis Dr. Phil, I hope your partner never has a different opinion to yours on shows/movies, otherwise you might see that as grounds for dismissal

reply

Modern Family is utter crap,no wonder you don't get this

reply

It's pretty condescending and ignorant to assume that the second somebody dislikes something it's because they "don't get it" i get it, i just don't like it. Its all subjective, grow up a bit

reply

It's not because you dislike it,sweetheart,it's because you think Modern Family is funny.

reply

i hope you and the paint are very happy together

Well said. In fact, and I'm not ashamed to admit this, I didn't get half the pop culture references on the show, but I still loved every minute of it because of the characters.

I only do it with superheroes.

The amateurish production values of some shots (from an over-stylized American standpoint) are hard to get used to, but there are a few laugh out loud lines every episode and the chemistry between the actors is fun to watch. It's a great show.

reply

im an American and i, very honestly, have no idea what you are talking about.

ive watched all the episodes twice now, and never once thought anything was "amateurish". and looking back at it... still dont.

but then, i do watch more british sitcoms than american ones, and have for some time now. if anything is hard to get used to, its the complete lack of genuine humor here in america. i gave up on it about a decade ago.

With everything that went over your head maybe your just very short.

very possible, i am a munchkin

What my question is, is do you like Shaun Of The Dead?

*formerly bloodispike*

reply

I quite enjoyed Shaun of the Dead yes

reply

How can you like Shaun of the Dead and not Spaced? Same actors, writers, sets, even dialogue is recycled into Shaun of the Dead from Spaced and the whole idea came from one of the early episodes lol

When I sat down to watch the first episode as soon as Tim said "I cried like a baby at the end of Terminator 2, you know with the thumb!" I was hooked. And by the very end with the Lemon Jelly song and they are comfy/cuddling in their bean bag chair watching TV I knew I'd be rewatching this show over and over again.

Drunken Marsha, ever artistic Brian, Mike the lovable wannabe soldier...they're just all such great characters. And you can't really picture other actors in those roles.

I just love to laugh at this show and am glad learn on the making of that Tim and Daisy got together, had a daughter, whom Tim wanted to name Luke. lol

Wonder what Tim would think of Disney buying Star Wars....

reply

If SPACED is the worst show you've EVER seen...you clearly don't watch much TV.

I watch quite a bit actually, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Modern Family, Orange is the New Black, and most recently Parks and Recreation are some of my favourite shows right now, you know, entertaining, not contrived like Spaced

reply

...Modern Family and Parks and Rec...NOT contrived? Okey dokey.

reply

not in my opinion, especially in comparison to something like Spaced

reply

It seems like you just really like a lot of straight forward American humor. Spaced may not be for everyone but for those of us who like it, we we REALLY like it. Like LOVE it. I've been hooked since the first time I saw it about 10 years or so ago and it's in been in a regular rotation for me ever since.

I also enjoy almost all of the shows you mentioned. I wouldn't compare Breaking Bad or Orang is the New Black to Spaced since those two shows are from a completely different drama.

Anywho... Spaced, quite honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen and I suspect I will still be laughing at it 10 years from now.

I can only imagine that the references passed over your head- and because there's a LOT of them, that probably ruined 70% of the show. As for the other 30%... I always bonded well with the characters, and their awkwardness in everyday situations. Especially daisy- her struggles were relatable. Perhaps you don't see any of yourself/ responses in these situations? The only other thing that comes to mind is that this is an extremely quirky, eccentric show- say, you ('you' as a general term now) like shaun of the dead (I say because it's similar)...doesn't mean you'll like spaced. It's only really if the zany, slightly geeky/ cult feeling of that film appeals, then, and only then, may you like spaced. That's how I always think of it anyway... So with this in mind, I have an idea of why you might dislike it.
