Is it worth watching

I love firefly, now I need to fill the void is this show worthy of following firefly?

reply

It has a similar story concept (a band of fugitives declared outlaws running away from tyranny in an unique vessel ) and like Firefly it is a character arc story at its core. Though Farscape is more like science fiction/fantasy rather than science fiction/Western Firefly. It has countless different unique alien species , cultures , civilizations created by remarkably inventive Henson Co. , crazy aesthetic outlook , surreality , mysticsm , out of bounds humor and some episodes that really push the envelepe as far as I am concerned like nothing in tv ever could. For me Farscape is the best at its genre but I admit it might not be for everyone. I would say try and judge yourself. First half of season one might seem a little generic and too episodic but it is vital to watch every episode to get a grip in every character in Moya.

Hope that helps..

I agree; however, Ben Browder, a.k.a. "talentless ex-frat-boy actor", in addition to the writers who basically let Browder be Browder, because the Dude got no game! His acting sucks. At least in Stargate SG-1, he tried to be serious, but let's face it, he's got a pretty face, but ain't no Richard Dean Anderson. He looks so uncomfortable at times I just want to punch him!

Love the rest of the cast, tho', and the show could have been great. I would have preferred Kent McCord! Or Nathan Fillion from Firefly.

Absolutely. It should tell you something that this board is still active after the show being off the air for 10 years.

Is it worth watching

Hell yes.

reply

That should be Frell yes.

reply

More appropriately, FRELL, YEAH! :)

What else have you seen? Without an idea about the science-fiction / space opera / etc.-type shows that you've seen - beyond Firefly - it would be difficult to develop some idea of whether or not someone else thinks that you might think it's worth it.

reply

I'll take you up on that question, as I am myself wondering if i should start watching it. The few episodes I've seen so far don't cut it for me. I was interested in the Browder-Black duo i liked in SG-1, but I'm really wondering whether this show is worth my time. I loved both SG 1 and Atlantis, Firefly, Voyager, didn't care much for Deep Space 9 (although it had its moments and seasons, but i'm not rewatching it to death like i do with voyager or both stargates), and loved BSG. I"d say my all time favorite is Stargate.

reply

Yes it is; as mentioned before me it might not be for everybody but if it clicks with you, you are in for one hell of a ride.

Farscape and Firefly are very similar in that they're both driven by the characters rather than the stories. Farscape is certainly more inconsistent in its writing, but the arcs themselves are far more epic (as is the general tone of the show as it goes on) due to the length.

I'd recommend giving it a try, but it's far more sci-fi than Firefly and much less grounded. It's definitely a show that got better as it went on.

I'm currently watching this show for the first time, I'm about 3/4 of the way through season 1. It seems like a very cheesy show, cheaply made, with recycled sets but.... I just can't stop watching it! I simply do not not know why. I mean, I loved the idea of a contained universe, much like DS9, where most of the action took place on the station, maybe this is why I'm comfortable with this show. Also, I just love the music, absolutely the best facet of this show.
Well, I'm off to watch another episode. Must be a good show because I've got a warm buzz knowing I've still got three more seasons AND two movies to go.

If you can't stop watching 3/4 into season one, be aware, it's going to get worse. Or better, if you will, when the main plot get's introduced with Scorpius.

reply

Near the end of season 1 is when the characters, plotz, and production values all come into their own, along with a much darker tone. And it involves the arrival of a certain villain.

Just finished season 1. The last episode was brilliant.

Most of Season 2 and the start of Season 3 had a lot of "outdoor environments" recreated in a soundstage. Whoever made the decision to make use of a good ol' fashioned location scout deserves a cookie.

Absolutely, fantastic show that ended too soon. Wouldn't want to spoil any of it but suffice to say it's up there as one of the best sci-fi shows of all time...for me anyway...and one of the best villains too. It's a treat and any sci-fi fan owes it to themselves to watch it!!
