What to play now!?

Ok.....thank goodness I haven't finished yet, so this is still a hypothetical question(for me at least :P).

Big quandry though, because when I do eventually get to the end of Planescape what on earth do I, or should it be can I play next!?

Like a few others have mentioned, after you have played this magnificent piece of art most everything else pales in comparison.

I had the good fortune of playing the outstanding Fallout 1 and 2 before playing this, but Baldur's Gate was not so lucky. After all the favourable reviews I dived in, but frankly it left me feeling hollow. Was I playing the same game which was mentioned by many as groundbreaking! It felt simplistic, one dimensional, even a little childish. Sadly, I have to put this down to the Planescape: Torment effect. That is experiencing something so awesome everything else is a bit of a let down.

Now, back to the question.

What to play next, and don't say Deus Ex, because I already have.:P

(a little footnote)

It seems we won't being seeing games like this anymore. Even though I didn't like BG it did pave the way, and more importantly make it possible for this game to appear. Well those days are long gone. About the only CRPG's around now are Bethesda's or World of Warcraft. Don't get me wrong, these games are good. It's just the style of these games won't produce another PT.

You should finish the Baldur's Gate series through to its completion (play BG2 and BG2: Throne of Bhaal). The story isn't as good as Torment of course but it gets a lot better after BG1.

Also Try:

0) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - if you only pick one, play this (the first KOTOR is way better than the 2nd).

1) Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines - a pretty good story, dark environment, satisfying ending(s), superb voice acting. A little glitchy at times but well worth playing.

2) Dreamfall - awesome story, but it's more of an adventure game than an RPG. It ranks up there with Torment for unique games.

3) Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer- a bit shallow at times, but there are some very awesome scenes in this game which left an imprint on me.

4) Mass Effect - again, awesome story, but sci-fi rather than fantasy. Definitely worth playing.

5) Call of Cthulhu (dark corners of the Earth) - kind of bad voice acting and the control scheme sort of sucks, but it's truly a unique game with some incredible moments.

6) Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, and Fear: None of these are RPGs but all three of them have excellent storylines.

7) The Witcher - I wasn't able to play this because my computer needs upgrading but I've heard it's very unique and compares to Torment.

Well, for some reason the website's down, but the folks at Rogue Dao Studios are in the process of making their Planescape Trilogy for Neverwinter Nights II. I can't see it quite measuring up to Torment standards, being a free TC/campaign, but if you need to satiate that Sigil hunger, it should do the trick. Hopefully it will be released within the year.

EDIT: As for The Witcher, wait for the Collector's re-release or dl the dialogue patch. So much is lost with the original English translation.

Thanks to quietdisdain and pfhyre for their recommendations. I'll be sure to check them out.

In the meantime it's back to Sigil.

Have you given The Witcher Enhanced Edition a play through yet? It's pretty much the only western-style rpg released in (at least my own) recent memory, and pretty good at that. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow for any sort of non direct combat role playing, but at least they've done more for the genre recently than many others.

The Witcher is pretty much only decent RPG game around out of the new ones, so any RPG fan who haven't played it yet, should give it a try I think.

Thief: The Dark Project (Gold Version) and Thief 2: The Metal Age.

System Shock 2

All 3 made by Looking Glass Studios (RIP), the guys who did Deus Ex.

In terms of narrative brilliance I would recommend the following -

Shadow of the Colossus / Ico
Grim Fandango
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound (solely for the ending but my god what an ending)

I have already played the Thief series and there is nothing comparable. Quite simply they are incredible games, and are on my all time top 10.

Played System Shock 2, but gave up not far into it.

Thank you for your recommendations. :)

You should give a shot for Dragon Age: Origins :)

I would recommend 4 excellent games: Witcher 1&2, Knights of the Old Republic and Divine Divinity. All are incredibly crafted CRPGs and deserve to be played.

Vampire Bloodlines, KOTOR, Battlezone 1, Jagged Alliance 2, Freespace 2.. just a few awesome games if you haven't played em.

I highly suggest you play "Dragon Age: Origins." That game is super imaginative with multiple story-lines, and super interesting side players. I STILL can't get Morrigan out of my mind. She rocked my world.

"Dragon Age II" was nothing more than a money grab and tried to ride the coat tails of the original Dragon Age. If you want an intense, super memorable story, try "Dragon Age: Origins." If you simply want AD&D action, try "Dragon Age II."

I got a feeling though that once you play Dragon Age: Origins, you won't want the adventure to stop -- so you can't help yourself but to play part II. At least that's what happened to me.
