was England actually tyrannical or oppressive to the thirteen colonies?

Not as much as they were to other colonies but I think it plays more into the strong will and forward thinking of the founding fathers than most other people at the time. Unlike most other colonies, America also had the resources to put on a long term battle with the British. This combination played well into a revolution.
