Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) or Gone in Sixty Seconds (1974)

Which one of these two great movies do you fans out there prefer and why do you prefer one over the other?

To me, they are both great films for any car enthusiast. I personally like the original version the best, but that's my opinion. For the true real experience of the original film, you will need to get an original VHS copy. I'll explain why later.

I think the 2000 remake is a great movie as well but for different reasons. There are a few scenes that are a little over the top, like the scene where the famous "Eleanor" jumps a wreck on a bridge via a tow truck near the end of the movie, but overall it's still a great film. We have watched both versions several times and the quaility of the 2000 remake of this film is far superior in Blu-Ray to the original, but we stil enjoy the true movie that only is available on the original VHS release. We have the first release of the original on VHS which is the only reason we have a VHS player still hooked up to our entertainment system. The other DVD releases as well as the Blu-Ray version of the original are very different in that they have a completely different soundtrack. What I like about the 1974 movie compared to the 2000 remake is that is is pure raw talent, excellent driving skills, and much more realistic in many aspects. Plus a forty minute REAL car chase can't be beat.

We also have the 25th anniversary DVD release of the original as well as the Blu-Ray version, but with the DTS soundtrack, you miss a lot of the original sounds of engines roaring, metal scraping metal, and several other real life sounds. This is how the rereleases should sound, but they are a total different sound experience. A little dissapointed in that, but we still watch the VHS version on most occasions.

Another reason I'm partial to the original was because the "star", so to speak, was also an incredible stunt man and the leader of the crew. He also did almost all of the car stunts. His name was H.B. Aliki also know as Toby. Unfortunately while working on a long planned sequel to "Gone in Sixty Seconds", he was also working on another project that led to his death in 1989. The biggest difference in the two movies is that the original was mostly all about the cars. It didn't have the side stories from the 2000 film like Cage's brothers problems, nor the love story that was in the 2000 remake. They where interesting side plots, but again these side stories cut into what the original film is most famous for, the greatest car chase of all time.

So, what is your opinion on the two movies?
