Fun idea, great actors, fine directing... terrible script.

This movie had a lot of potential and the acting, directing and plot work well for an unusual and fun space-flick like this.
But the script killed it for me. This has got to be one of the worst scripts ever. Totally rudimentary and almost high-school level.

A few examples of uninspired lines in no particular order:

"I'm getting too old for this *beep*
"Hell of a time for confessions, general."
"Just hold on a little longer, baby." (to the space shuttle)

And that's just the lines. The whole buildup of scenes was really poorly executed. For example, Clint's wife was nothing but a plot point to give him something to come home to. Also, Clint was very quick to spark the idea that NASA send his whole team into space.
And the reunions between the old guys went by with only a few words. And what was with the fight between Clint and Tommy? It was all very poorly written, and I'm frankly surprised Clint wanted to work with such bad scriptwriters...

It's ridiculous for sure but I much prefer a fun adventure like this to crap like Armageddon.

I'd say both are fun adventures. Another one from the period that is not bad is Deep Impact.
