woman singing

what is the significance of the woman singing as FH walks away at the end? (for that matter, what is the symbolism of her anyway?) and is the part where FH touches her head like Jesus healing somebody? this movie is a tricky one.

thanks

reply

The song that she is singing is about redemption and this movie is ,essentially, about redemption.

That brings me to a question I have - ever since I saw the movie, several times, and it seems the more you view it the more you see.... but why the title: Jesus' Son? I don't get it. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.

Ah f++k it dude, let's go bowlin'.

Perhaps it was a Holden Caufield, love of innocense thing? And also at the beginning, he said that he was looking for a pair of lungs that could match the screaming girl. Love of beauty, perhaps?

reply

The title is from a Lou Reed song called "Heroin."

reply

The title itself does indeed come from the Lou Reed song Heroin, specificly the lines

When I'm rushin on my run/
And I feel just like Jesus' son

Which is quoted in the opening page of the Book this was made from by Denis Johnson. A fantastic American writer.

More significalty though the character feels like the son of Christ becaue he seems witness to many miracles (minor though they are) throught the story.

he "knew there would be an accident in the storm, even before they car slowed"
he survives a heroin overdose (though not through his own action)
he rescues ophaned bunnies, only to lead them to their death

FH feels like someone who maybe was capable of the miraculous but wasn't able to fill his father's shoes.

Later in the book/film he passes through the Beverly home touching people, imparting his love on virtual strangers

If i pulled out my copy of the book i could make this point much more lucid.

reply

very good point.

especially when after he touches the people they turn and follow him in a way.

Couldn't Jesus' son just be...a man, or even mankind? Capable of great acts but inevitably flawed?

reply

first, the Mennonite woman isn't blind, when you look out of a lit room to the dark outside you'd just see your reflection. Anyway.. FH is no jesus figure, he doesn't witness miracles, more like illusions. I think the title is meant just as lou reed meant it, "when I'm rushing on my run and I feel just like Jesus' son, oh and I guess that I just don't know" painting the tragic figure of a soul-searching junkie, hense the "miracles" more like lucid accounts of actual life that seem like more than they are.

reply

Without having read the book, that was my take on it too, tinsoldier.

Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

He was looking for a pair of lungs......Michele had quite a scream after he left her at the abortion clinic. He had premonitions, so it is possible that even though he was not in the room, he heard her scream. That was a primal scream and he may have felt that in his soul. He didn't understand where it was coming from but he knew it was important in his life's purpose.

I can think of the baby rabbits, probably trying to breathe in his hands, but he crushed the life out of their lungs. The naked lady in the air had her mouth open while gliding, but no sound came out.

The singing lady, the Minnanite (not sure how to spell it) had a purity of spirit. This is what he yearned for. He touches her through the glass, yet she doesn't see him, is she blind?

reply

so has any one answered a definitive yes or no if he does indeed happen to have a heritage down from Jesus?

reply

I say there is not a heritage of Jesus in this man. He understands religion, but he is unaware of his spirituality.

Except she wasn't blind.
