...who died? We see her walk out to the dance floor not needing crutches...and all those stories she told. So she was a pathological liar? Her way of dealing with her traumas was to live a life of fantasy/untruths? It seemed strange that they introduced this character so late in the film, then showed us some very dramatic moments concerning her...but never really explained this character to us.

Having multiple partners who all died - true or not, if she believed that and she was the common link, it would probably turn her off of relationships. She stated that life is fragile and aren't her and FH miracles and lucky to be alive (at this point he was in the beginning stage of recovery but not really recovering yet).
I assumed she had a cane from an accident (car or otherwise) as a result of substance misuse. I don't think she was faking the cane -- however, when FH asks her to dance, rather than push another man away so he doesn't die, she accepts the dance and the preciousness of life. She limps out and supports herself on FH. He becomes her crutch. I know people that have crutches or canes... They prefer to use them, but when they have something out to support their weight, they don't mind giving them up. Also, they are capable of taking a few steps without a crutch/cane. FH became her support, if only temporary.
