Name of Main Character

I know we all call him FH and I know that that is supposed to suffice, but are there any clues to what his name is otherwise? I've read the book several times and found nothing. I recently saw the movie and it says nothing (that I noticed).

Also, does anyone know any other movies in which you don't get a name for the main character? If not the main, one of the other important ones?

Just curious.

Fight Club, Ed Norton's character is known only as "Narrator"

I think that for the sake of argument, his name is simply F*ckhead. I've also read the book several times and seen the movie and there is no real clue to the character's real name. My take on this is that that is one of the points of the movie. Here we have a character with absolutely no sense of self-identity that he takes it from detrimental comments made by others. If he f*cks everything up, then that is who he is. He has no name because if he did then that would imply that he was better than that. For me, at least, one of the main purposes of the film is the search for identity.

In "Se7en", Kevin Spacey is only known as "John Doe"...but that's not his real name, and we never find out what it is.

About Fight Club, they call him "Narrator" and they also say "Narrator/Jack" in the credits (I am Jack's Colon (I get cancer, I kill Jack)

Clint Eastwood's character in the good the bad and the ugly, I think, is just called 'the man with no name' or 'blondie'.

Actually, I just checked and he is credited as 'joe' although I'm sure the name was never mentioned in the film.

Also in Resevoir dogs, Messers Pink, Blue (and Brown?) wisely never give their real names.

Clint Eastwood's character never had a real name in any of the "Dollars" movies, and neither did Charles Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West. Also, Charlie Chaplin was simply cast as "A Tramp" in most all of his movies. Outside of those and the Reservoir Dogs characters previously mentioned, I can't think of anymore off the top of my head.

If we were to play opposites, and say characters with multiple names (we're talking same character, not the same actor playing multiple roles), you could say Cary Grant's character from Charade, which I can't remember what the hell his real name turned out to be.

In the movie "Rebecca" the main character doesn't really have a name. She is called "the second Mrs. DeWinter" but her first name and maiden name are never mentioned.

reply

Could it be..Rebecca?

reply

No, that was the first Mrs. DeWinter.

"I" in Withnail & I

And Nameless, of Hero...

I haven't seen the movie but in the book Rebecca, the author never reveals the main character's name.
Also, in Closer you don't find out the name of the character played by Natalie Portman until the last moment.

reply

You never learn the name of Daniel Craig's character in Layer Cake, either.
