if the serial killer survived until 1999, why did he stop killing?

if he escaped from the house, why the cops didnt get him later, why did he stop killing?

Serial Killers do this sometimes. Dennis Radar (The BTK Killer) went long stretches of time without killing. Its also possible that he killed other girls in that 30 years and simply got away with it.

It's sometimes called a "cooling off" period when they do for large spans of time without killing.

He only had one hand, that made it a lot harder to overpower someone.

Just speculating, but perhaps the cops did catch him in 1969 and he goes to prison for 30 years. When he gets out, he comes back for to complete his revenge. So when the timeline changes and his hand is blown off in 1969, the 1999 timeline is changed as well. In either timeline (with or without the hand) he could still be in prison for 30 years after being caught in 1969.

I just guess killing becomes a harder thing to do once your cover has been blown. The killer's identity became known among the police after John's dad exposed him. So, he must have spent a lot of time in hiding with his "wanted" photos all over the place. Or he may have been arrested and spent a good portion of his life in jail. Just my thoughts.

One can assume that when Shepherd killed his mother, he had his "perfect murder" and no longer felt the urge to kill. The Nightingale Murders could be him building up to finally killing his mother. If you look closely, you can see Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd when they find the body of Mary Finelli and interview the neighborhood. After the timeline has changed, Shepherd kills more women and eventually his own mother.

The movie never clearly states when Mrs. Shepherd was killed, just that she was "murdered a long time ago." It's possible that she was his last kill.

It is stated that his mother was Shepherd's first murder. John tells the 1999 Shepherd in the bar that he knows he killed his mother. He goes on to explain that Shepherd changed his manner of killing so that they wouldn't connect the future Nightingale murders to his mother's and by extension investigate Shepherd.

Watch the movie again.

In the beginning when they find Mary Finelli and interview the Shepherds, Shepherd's mother is clearly seen. Which means she didn't die until the time continnuum was changed. Mrs. Shepherd was killed differently from the other Nightengales so the police wouldn't tie her to the Nightengales and investigate the Shepherd family.

Mary Finelli was the first Nightengale murder, and his mother was killed later, between the third Nightengale and 1999.

Mr. Shepard also says Jack got caught up in the Knapp hearings, set up by some dirty cops who needed a fall guy. I agree Jack was in prison during the interim. Either for being a corrupt cop or because they knew he was the Nightingale.
